Saw this Zenith, which I think is a 12-S-471 at an antique store on Monday. Cabinet is in great shape, speaker looks good. All the push buttons are there. Dial cord slips. 1 empty tube socket in rear right hand corner as you face the back of the radio.I like the way the dial face changes when bands are switched . Asking price is $95.00. Is this a fairly common model Zenith? Tag on radio states " working" ???
Uhmm, do I have room for another console ??
Thanks for your input.

Ugly----as are many things in the 40s. It was like that with cars too----as in: "How can we improve upon the classic designs of the 30s?"

I guess "ugly" is relative to personal preference. I like the 12S471, and many others do as well.

This is a very desirable model and not very common. $95 is a steal for this 12 tube shutterdial! If it really is in good shape, GRAB IT! :D

Run, don't walk. That's an easy 8x return on your money even if you don't keep it. Most desirable of the model year, and very popular.

Oh, one more thing. iirc, it has a spring mounted chassis. May want to remove it before transport otherwise you risk damaging the dial glass.

Naw, nothing wrong with you. We can't all like the same thing. Otherwise, collecting would be way too fierce and competitive.
I never mean my comment as a slam towards you. Just that I really like my 12-S-471! :D

VERY collectable shutter-dial Zenith. Nice ones used to sell for about $1500 on Ebay.
I have one here that had a Slide rule dial Scott installed in it.

A 12-S-471 cabinet with a Scott installed? Have I seen this before? Interesting! Not the first Scott I've seen in Zenith cabinets.

Since you asked:

A 15" speaker replaced the original 12", a shelf was added to hold the amp and a new face board was added to the front with the slide rule dial and knobs. Ironically, the chassis and cabinet are both circa 1941.

One of the best looking and most desirable Zeniths ever built, based upon how much they usually bring when restored. As others pointed out $95 is a steal and so would several times that amount be. These should still go in the very high hundreds if not $1000 in excellent condition.

Bruce, thank you for posting a pic of your Scott Phantom!
I wouldn't call it a frankenradio as Scotts were often installed in other brand cabinets. It was pretty much what the wealthy wanted would be what they put their Scott in.

I'm not a big fan of the post-1938 Zeniths, but this would be on my short list of desired ones. $95 is a steal.

Which antique store is this located in? I'm on my way! Just kidding! It's probably gone by now. Good luck with your new Zenith!

I think it looks pretty nice. I hope mcars gets it. I wish I could find something that nice for that kind of price.

I called the antique store today. She can't really hold it for me, but she did remove the " for sale " tag from it. 8)

Antique shops typically take credit cards. I would have paid for it so they would have to hold onto it.
