Just got an email from a chap with this radio. I am trying to find the model number and do research on it before I call him.

The first picture is the one he sent me. The other two pictures are similar to this one but not quite like it. One has magic eye. the other's dial is different. I just want to know what the model of the first picture is if possible. The pictures are of a 139 and 139E. Maybe The one in the first picture is another extension of the 139 model I cannot find?

They used the same cabinets for more than one model as the dial and shaft spacing were similar on many chassis. The black and gold dial was used on the same sets that the multicolor network dial was originally used on, it was a running production change. The only thing you can know for sure is that the sets with the multicolor dial are older, but perhaps only by weeks or months during that model year.

The only way to positively ID the model number is to read that number off the chassis. It would either be printed on the black patent plate, or more likely rubber stamped onto the chassis. See if you can get a clear photo of the rear of the set and maybe the number will be readable.

Thanks,

He says it's a 139 from 1937. We agreed to 45$ and I will pick it up tomorrow. He says it works on both a.m. and shortwave bands. Should be a good deal I would think!

Yes, even given the visible veneer damage that's not a bad price. While that is an entry level chassis for the full sized table models that year, it works really well when everything is right.

Finished it up today. Not too bad considering I can't really do cabinet work. View it here: https://youtu.be/Cle4ge5J-ho Works wonderfully.

Nice Job, especially on the veneer replacement!
