Hello All,

I am looking for some enlightenment on what I should expect when/if I bring this beauty home.

My wife has been looking for a classic mid-century record/radio console and fell in love with the unit in the pictures below.

I have yet to see it in person but the wife fell in love and we plan to pick it up on Saturday.

My question is what should i look for when seeing it in person, and if I do purchase it, what do I need to know before I plug it in and turn it on?

From the looks of it in the pictures it is darn near perfect, but I know that sometimes looks can be deceiving.

Please let me know what I am in for and what I can do to make sure it continues to work for many years.

Thanks,

Levi

Sorry for the large photo size.

If it's all there, you are ahead of the game. The radio will need a cleaning and somebody to check its electricals. The turntable's rubber drives will have hardened by now, so that needs somebody to go over it....the needle cartridge is shot, too. If that has a television in it, that's another layer of complication. That's a huge set AND your wife loves it? Bring it home and you're gold! Craig

Don't turn it on until it has been serviced.

I haven't found that model number ...could you post a picture of the label on the back?

Your pictures are fine!!

Where are you located?

That Packard Bell looks just about as 1960s Mid Century Modern as you can get. That's a good pick. The whole unit looks to be in exceptionally nice condition.

As mentioned, the two problems that you'll likely run into is a bad phone cartridge and a bad idler wheel. Rebuilding a rubber idler wheel will probably cost you around $50 to rebuild not including shipping.

Here's a few discussions concerning idler wheels.

Here are a couple of websites you may care to check out for possible idler wheel replacement.

Hi All,

So we picked it up and it is beautiful. It came with the original demo record as well and the original unpacking instructions.

We were too excited to wait to hear it so we plugged it in and everything seems to work as expected. It does need a new needle cartridge like analog.tv said, since the one that is on it looks original as well.

There is no TV, just a Garrard AT6 and the head unit.

Label on the back says Packard Bell Model RPC-24 WAL. It has fold out speakers and the wood looks to be walnut. I cannot see any sign of modification or repairs it looks like we lucked out with an all original console.

We live in the Seattle/Tacoma area and I assume there are a good number of places out here that work on these things but I have no idea to tell the good from the bad. If anyone has a suggestion on a good place in the area to take it to please let me know.

With it being in such good condition I feel I have an obligation to ensure it will last for the next generation of audiophile.

Thanks for all your feedback and instruction.

Levi

So I found two people her in the area that seem to know what they are doing.

I am going to take it in this weekend to have it looked at and inspected.

I was also put in contact with a fella named Stan who sound very knowledgeable when it comes to this console. I was very impressed after talking with him and I will follow up with some information he requested.

The unit is unplugged and will not get any further use until a professional has time to take a look at it.

Thanks to everyone here who gave me some direction as to what I should do with this console.

-Levi
