Post subject:  Hyperton cathedral - leave alone or fix it?

About 4-5 years ago I bought this thing on ebay. It was missing the speaker and knobs. I bought a speaker/grill cloth/knobs for it. I still need to get the correct output transformer. It was also missing the output tube (the socket just said "Pentode" on it). Looking at similar tube lineups, I determined it was probably a 45 (whoops - I meant 47) so I put one in there. I can't find the tube lineup sheet I drew up right now.
Anyway, the chassis frame has no way that I can tell to be secured to the cabinet, so when it was shipped, it bounced around and damaged the front (I glued it back together).
It's just sitting on the shelf right now. I'm kind of hesitant to start replacing parts on something that may be one of a kind. It looks like the transformer was replaced at some time. The layout reminds me of some of the early Philco cathedrals. Also, look at the tube socket at the top of the last picture is partially hanging out in space.

The pentode should likely be a #47 and not a #45.

Whoops - you're right - it's a 47.

That 4 pin socket looks like it should be for the output transformer and speaker. i see connections to the output tube plate (looks like a 47) and B+.

Definitely fix it..the chassis looks nice. As far as the cabinet I'd be 50/50 on whether to refinish it. Looks like someone varnished it along the way.

Here's a staged photo I made a few years ago. Like what if great grandpa/grandma were sitting around the table looking at old photos and listening to the radio (I know - it's corny) :)

Yeah, that varnish has to go - no matter what! I would like to re-stuff those caps - but the ends are not what I normally see. I wouldn't know how to do it.

Those are Cornell Cubs with the paper and foil wrapped around a wooden dowel. They put a paper label on them then wax them.

You have to get crafty to restuff those.
