I saw this ad on CL here in Phoenix, $1,000 for a mid-sixties GE console in good, but not spectacular, condition. http://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/atq/2948311588.htmlHere's the e-mail exchange between me and the seller: Aaron2 wrote: Seller wrote: Nope. 1000 obo. Where do these people come from?!?

Typically, solid-state stereo consoles from the '60s sell anywhere from $10 up to maybe $75 if it's a really exceptional model. I sold a GE recently for $149, but it was super-rare and had a really incredible Danish Modern type cabinet, which is a style that a lot of people like right now. But $1,000? I don't see it selling for anywhere near that price.
I'll give you $60 for yours since it looks like it's in pretty good shape.
Aaron I didn't get a response to this e-mail. Big surprise, huh?

I wouldn't even offer $60. Its a set I wouldn't think twice about driving past if I saw it with a big "Free!" sign stuck to the front on the side of the road.

I think it's a "Porta-Fi" set and I have the satellite speaker to go with it. It's probably a pretty nice sounding set, believe it or not.

Maybe we should be telling him that he's nuts for selling so cheaply; that those usually go for $4,000!.

The thing is ugly looking. That's my biggest problem with it.
That said... I will say that these are starting to become somewhat popular with the hipster crowd. I go to a local and fairly trendy antiques fair that seems to always attract people with money and the last time I was there were quite a few 60's and 70's consoles with $100+ asking prices.

My wife and I were renting a booth in an antique store (before the owner stopped paying his rent and got kicked out of the building!). We've sold three of them in the last six weeks or so. Two of them sold for about $99 and one sold for $149. But they were all very clean and operational, so I'm not too surprised. It wasn't really my choice to sell them. We're moving into a new house soon, and my wife wanted most of them gone. I had about a dozen when I started. I'll whittle them down between now and our moving date.

After several days of fluctuating prices, the seller is back down to $400. Um...yeah. Good luck with that, guy. http://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/atq/2948311588.html

He'd be lucky to get $40 for it.
In fact he'd lucky to find anyone who'd haul it away to the dump for $40.

I collect solid state consoles and some of mine arent that attractive, but that looks like a cabinet that belongs in a bathroom. Ugly but interesting. He still has it listed at $400 when will these people learn?
