Jesus - that was COMPLETELY avoidable! Looks double-boxed decently, but nothing to firm-up the radio in its box?! I suppose the first toss where it landed upside-down popped the ol' egg shell. Five pieces of newspaper in the radio box and I bet that would have never happened...

Glue & paint time - hot rod it... :)

Double boxing did not do much good since radio was right against cardboard of inner box. At least wrap the radio a few times in bubble wrap to provide a barrier. Sorry for the loss.

Too bad. I love the style of that Bendix.

Don't toss it out, though. Someone would glue that case, paint it and probably enjoy it.

Don't buy bakelites on Ebay, 5 out of 10 chance it may break.

Glue it together... and paint it.... you'll love it.
The 1st one on the left in this picture was shattered and re-glued... now look at it!

Sorry that had to happen to you and a perfectly innocent radio. The biggest problem is obvious - there IS NO
packing material! Newspaper is for reading and should never be used for packing anything except more newspaper.

I'm sure I seem like obnoxious when I do it, but I always write my ebay seller through their console and
insist that no newspaper be used. I offer to pay extra for packing material if needed but I let the shipper know
that I won't accept a radio shipped with newspaper as packing material. It seems that every damaged radio I've
ever gotten was packed with newspaper. If the seller does so after my "warning", I express my distaste in
their feedback. I think I've only had to do that once.

Sorry for your loss...

Decoflair, ask them if they want it back, because you can't accept it that way. They should just go ahead and refund your entire payment. If not, put in a "not as described" claim to eBay.

My experience has been 2 out of about 18...But you have to let them know, in no uncertain terms, how to pack it.

When that's happened to me. I sent picts to the seller who offered a full refund. But they didn't want to even bother shipping it back at their expense... so those ultimately those ended up being free.
But it's little consolation when you think about the irreplaceable treasure.

Seller has contacted me in regard to an insurance claim with the carrier, UPS.
The radio was insured. Interestingly, the radio was only shipped about 150 miles within the state.
We will see what happens next week before I place a claim with Ebay.

That type of packing I can 90% guarantee UPS will deny the insurance claim.

Remember that
...The insurance basically is between the insurance company and the seller... not you.

The seller is the insured person. It is the sole responsibility of the seller to make sure that he delivers the goods to you in the condition you bought them.. nothing less.

Yes he may ask you to save the packing materials and provide some info... but his claim with them is not your problem.

You should point out to Paypal or Ebay that the radio you actually received was not "as described"/damaged.

You should be fully compensated with funds returned ...and be free to move on to another radio if you choose.

Then the seller can work out the damage problems with the insurance company at his lesiure.

You are not the actual 'insured party" and have no stake in it.

It's not the newspapers fault that radio shipped in a large box wrapped in many layers of large bubble wrap then centered in the box and filled with tightly packed newspaper and shipped USPS Parcel Post it would have made it there fine.
The biggest problem with the shipping above is that they used UPS when shipping anything faster is not better I will not bid on anything shipped UPS or FedEx unless the shipper will bomb proof the package. I personal have had 2 lionel train cars crushed when sent to me one by FedEx and the other by UPS. Both of those items had been packed in a large box with lots of padding. If you want your item fast and shipped by UPS or FedEx you need to have your shipper drop the item out of 2nd story window then stand on the box and see if the item is still intact.

9. 1.5“ Styrofoam put in sides and bottom of box

10. 3 layers of Carpet Padding put in Bottom and sides

+1.

The seller may mandate insurance as part of the shipping cost, and the seller is within his/her rights to include the insurance cost in the total shipping cost. However, that does not remove the obligation of the seller to ensure the goods are properly shipped to the buyer.

Some sellers still try to claim it's the responsibility of the buyer to file a claim with the shipping company, which is complete hogwash. Any seller that tries to claim this deserves an immediate negative feedback to go along with the claim with Ebay.

Trust me...
Anything ... I mean even a raw egg can be packed safely when wrapped around with 2 or three layers of large-bubble, bubble-wrap.... then placed in a box with peanuts all around the bubble wrap about 2 inches.

.... Especially even safer if you double box it... by placing that box inside a larger box with 2" of peanuts.
Nothing will break even from a 3ft drop.

100% correct, and personally, I wouldn't wait for the seller to jerk around with the carrier; he didn't pack it according to their specifications.

File a NAD case with eBay today.

As Peter said, his problem is not yours; yours is "received not as described".

His is, trying to nail the carrier to compensate for lousy, inadequate packing, which he won't win anyways. So why wait?

I have provided the seller with five photos that he can easily forward to UPS claim department.
The seller has responded and is filing a claim with UPS.
I will wait another business day or two before filing my Ebay claim.

I'll update any progress.
