I am presently troubleshooting a will not turn-on problem with this Kenwood. I wish to test however after reading owners manual it states the system control cable must be connected or unit will not power on. Being I do not have the control cable or any other peice associated with the amp it appears I am stuck. What the heck does the system control cable do and is it possible to bypass?

I think the KC-209 should power up without that connected. It certain seems to do so here (and others)... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SU_7w90AaLs

I suspect your power problem may be elsewhere.

XS was a system Kenwood used to control other elements of the sound system. The KC-209 was just a preamplifier and controller for those elements. However, the preamp should work without XS connected to anything.

Apparently XS was to allow one remote to control all the parts of an XS compatible system. The preamp came with the remote control. Then if the other parts were plugged in, you could control all of them via the same remote (CD player, tape deck, etc.).

Here is an example with another XS capable preamplifier/amplifer - KRF-V7771D (could not find a free copy of the KC-209 manual)...

The difference with the KC-209 is that it is only the preamplifier/controller and requires something like the KM-209 to drive speakers.
