Finally!

Maybe now after all these years, I can stop writing letters to KNX 1070 demanding they reinstate the Drama Hour

Oh I really miss the KNX Drama Hour. When they ended it that's basically when I quit listening to my (AM) radios.

Great station. The playlist always shows "LA Oldies" no matter what's playing, not that I need help identifying the songs.

I just wish they were streaming at a little higher bit rate.

Sounds good to my old ears Flip. My kind a music, 60's.

Me too. It sounds just like when I used to listen on my pocket transistor radio.

Which, btw, seems to be the prevailing logic to streaming at 48k, although modernized to "people don't care" because they're listening with cellphones that have lousy sound (puny speaker or crap earbuds) to begin with.

Btw, I noticed the playlist is working now.

Fairly recently I stumbled on some old time radio shows being broadcast on KRLA 870 AM radio on the weekends. KRLA is based in Glendale. As I remember, it was on very late Saturday or Sunday night, starting around midnight or 1:00 AM. I tried to visit the KRLA 870 AM website so I could be more time and day specific, but didn't see anything listed. And to make matters worse, I think KRLA turns the power down in the evening. But, if you're a night owl and can pick up the signal, you might be in for a good time, radio-wise.

You bet they turn it down after sunset!

And I remember when KIEV was at 870, KRLA was at 1110 on the dial, and played top 40....Long ago...

I know it's a local SoCal thing, but how about we flood their email with our approval?

You know how many hot-rodders are sitting in their garages sipping 807s and listening to this great nostalgic music, and the station doesn't know? Millions of us old farts would let them know if it were as easy as an email?

I can't fine a reliable addy or I would post it.

All you have to do is press the contact button on the internet player;

Contact Us

310-478-5540 (p)
reception@mountwilsoninc.com
PO Box 250028
Los Angeles, CA 90025

And I am happy to announce that I've heard two commercials so far, earlier today. They won't need that many judging from a similar station, to stay up.

EDIT; OK, I emailed them, and included a link to this thread, so they'll be able to see the appeal, esp across the country via the net.

Great minds think alike. :-)

I figured that it can't hurt so I looked up the contact information and called the number a few days ago. To the lady on the phone I mentioned I wouldn't mind some commercials is that's what it takes to keep this music on the air. The lady I talked to was very nice and quite pleased that I liked their new format.

I also sent an email stating the same thing with a link to this thread on Tuesday.

Grand Rapids, MI, about 30 miles north-east of me has a PBS station that is all oldies. They have two frequencies on AM...one is the GR area, and one for the Muskegon/Lakeshore area. And they stream on the internet. The thing I like is they play stuff from some of the area bands (not counting Del Shannon), and they have a large library, not like most that have maybe 300-400 at most. And no adverts and annoying DJs who don't know squat about the artists. Refreshing!

Tuning to 1260 AM during the day is also a good test for sensitivity for my collection of transistor radios. By far, the Zenith 3000-1 picks up K-SURF the best! - Mark

It's just before 6AM and I can hear the station with a weak signal at my house on a Hallicrafters SX99 using an outside antenna so the power has to be really low before sunrise. I'll contact the station tomorrow to tell them I like the new format and commercials are fine with me if they can keep the station going playing oldies. Harry

I only live maybe a dozen miles or so from their transmitting towers, and it comes booming in here, daytime even stronger than the local station which is half the distance away.

Think I'll pull out my Philmore crystal set and give it a try...

I'm 9 miles from their three transmitter towers and reception on my amplified xtal radios is exceptional.

Thanks for the heads-up; it's coming in loud and clear in the West Tennessee area (via streaming, of course)!

Now, I just need to get my AM transmitter built which is still in kit form, sitting on a shelf...

I'm way too far away to hear this station, but I suspect this may be an interim format to maintain the frequency slot while they search for a buyer for the station. Does it sound like an automated format? Have they hired real disc jockeys and announcers? If they have, then maybe it's for real.

No you're not too far away. You can hear it on the net. The link is in my OP. The programming is probably automated, but this style of broadcasting doesn't necessarily signal they are using it as a place holder. Why would they bother with an internet stream if it was just temporary?

I've noticed that the OTA sound is different (and better) than that heard over the net...The former is boomier, the latter, more into the treble range.
