Found a FM radio station a couple of years ago after I started repairing a couple of old Zenith tabletop radios (H845) and others. Enjoyed the sound and sensitivity of these older tube radios. The station (WLKX) is a 3000 watt low power one that is about 40 miles away, so it doesn't come in stereo without hiss. I just use it in mono because I like the programming. They play music from the 50's to the mid 70's. I've heard "Sincerely" by the Maguire Sisters, and "Round and Round" by Perry Como, to things like "I'd Love to Change the World" by 10 years after. What I really like is they play stuff that weren't big hits even when they were on the air. Lots of variety and typically it's under 10 minutes of commercials per hour. The commercial breaks are concentrated so once the music starts up again, it's song after song with no breaks, usually 2 breaks per hour. Where I work on the radios, the reception is absolutely terrible (basement), so I just turn up the radio in the kitchen so I can hear it downstairs, and I'm not talking that loud. When upstairs I have a Zenith console that I listen to which picks it up fairly well, but leave it in mono. I keep telling people that stop over that this is the music that is supposed to be playing on it.
One other kind of music I've been enjoying is Terry Snyder and his all star band. I'd categorize it as "Lounge" music, but I totally enjoy the "enhanced" wide stereo on those Command Records. Never listened to it when I was younger, but now it's rather fun.
The radio station is WLKX at 95.9 and located in Forest Lake just north of St. Paul. It's also called "The Big Q"

Steve I found the really BEST tone ever came from the Zenith 6d-614. Wow. The fixed tone circuit is shown on the print and maybe is worth studying how they did it so well. Attachment:

Interesting about the 6D-614. Beautiful restoration as well.

Interesting about the 6D-614. Beautiful restoration as well. Thanks... I personally can't take credit for painting it as I had a fellow who painted motorcycles that I worked with. I'd do all the Ebay work and buying, then repairs/restoration and chassis work while he painted cabinets. Then I'd put them back on Ebay and we'd share the profits. He did some great work! The tone circuit looks like some interesting feedback from the output tube to the grid of the previous stage. http://www.nostalgiaair.org/Resources/101/M0025101.htm

Not sure where to begin analyzing that, as everything from the tube screen curves to the response of the speaker itself could be involved but the right RC coupling will selectively pass higher frequencies. I know Bose favors a 13KHz 'presence' bump in their response. Also, I imagine that SE 35L6GC gives a pretty fat tone as is. Perhaps one of the more dedicated tube engineering types could delve further into it.

That is a great description. Thanks for finding that! The phase manipulation is very interesting. Funny thing about bass though. I've looked a lot into bass and bass reproduction in the last few years, and there are several problems there. 'Real' bass is produced by moving a lot of air. For this you need power and the ability to move a lot of volume. This takes a large speaker with generous linear capacity. Due to the physics of speakers, this in turn will take a large cabinet. What is generally taken as bass from small speakers are actually harmonics the ear associates with bass. It is interesting that even in that day they were working with what is now called 'psychoacoustics', and manipulating the output for a particular sound impression. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychoacoustics
