Hi guys.. I stumbled across this Predicta Barberpole TV... It is pretty nice shape, and the price was real right, so I brought it home. I see what looks to be a factory hole on the side..was that the UHF tuner? if so, seems to be missing from the side of the unit. I don't know these sets well at all.... am I correct? Did some of them get made "UHF delete" with the side hole there but no tuner?? I suspect not, but I would like to hear from you folks who do know. Thanks

Mark in NJ

For TVs made at the time your set was made, UHF was not standard. I don't know if that hole was for a UHF tuner or not, but if it was then there may have been a snap in hole plug that has been lost.

The factory hole in the cabinet for the UHF tuner was about 2 to 2 1/2 inches circumference to permit the huge knob set it had to be inserted in the side. The hole you have in the side of yours looks to have been where someone had a toggle switch of some kind and later inserted a plug into it to cover it up. In other words, yours is not a factory UHF hole.

Given the problems the Predicta's had with their power switches a toggle switch seems likely.

UHF tuner is / was on the right side about 4 inches down.

Has a big brown knob with a gear reduction for fine tuning.

A couple of dogs on the knob engage a metal bracket inside the cabinet as the vernier tuning is all in the knob.

Tuned from Ch 14 to 83. Now there is no more TV above Ch 36.

The UHF tuner was stable and usually I would just switch the main tuner to UHF and the one and only U which would be there.

I will post up a picture of the factory UHF tuner on my set if you like.

Several months ago I re-assembled my Predicta barber-pole and use it in the dinning area to watch news while cooking dinner.

When I moved several years ago I disconnected and removed (one screw) the CRT unit. The very best way to move one of these. I did need a readable sam's to locate where the CRT video plugged in.

thanks..i am familiar with the uhf assembly..i had a tabletop predicta with uhf a few years ago and i sold it. i have to disassemble this to see if anything is sitting inside it... the hole in the side is where the uhf tuner would be apparently... but the hole must be too small, according to you guys, as it is only 1/2 inch across. When I get it apart I may find the answers. I was under the impression these barber poles were hard to find, but they turn up regularly, in this area.... there is another on C/L in northern NJ right now.. same unit.

I will take a close look at my Predicta tonight.

I'm thinking 1/2 inch hole seems too tight as the Knob assembly has two fingers that engage the metal bracket inside the cabinet besides the 1/4 shaft.

The bracket sits almost touching the inside of the cabinet on the tight side. The knob pushes on to the 1/4" shaft like any other knob.

The knob is big and heavy and it has a gear reduction for fine tuning for about 1 turn then it goes quick.

With the knob removed the bracket is clearly visible through the hole as it almost touches the side of the panel.

Hardly anybody got the UHF option out in the west.

This is the only hole in the side of the cabinet.

Does the VHF dial have a "UHF" position on it? Are there screw terminals in the rear for a UHF antenna?

My set which has its original UHF tuner has a UHF position on the VHF dial.

When UHF is selected a dial light is turned on on the UHF tuner knob.

I have a picture I took with my cell phone that shows the right side of the set with the curved back panel removed and the UHF tuner is visible.

Unfortunately the pic is about 3 Mb and I have no way in my work computer to scale it but if you PM me an email I will send it to you.

The UHF tuner is mounted on a bracket that is attached to the VHF bracket. The bracket has a round shaped end that is almost touching the side of the cabinet and appears to be near the size of the fine tuning knob.

As I mentioned the UHF knob has a couple of fingers that engage the bracket and need a hole big enough to pass through the cabinet hole.
