Where do they even get these ideas?

Rare 1952 console tv. There are a few scratches on this piece. It was donated to us from the original purchasers family. This piece was originally only offered to military officers, which is how the family got it. It was appraised at 3,000 3 years ago, but that was with the original purchase receipt and paperwork. Those have been lost, thus bringing down the value some.

Looks like a 1950 19 inch Sparton "Carnegie" model 5086.

Nice blonde console, but nothing particularly unique. I'd say maybe a $200-$250 set tops if the CRT is good. If not checked good, it may be worth even less.

The only value is in the 19"crt, IMO. Looks are nothing special. $100 max, ONLY if crt is good.....

Someone told them it was purchased at the PX (Post Exchange) and they just ran with it...

The PX in Germany sold US made TV's that would work on both 4.5 MHz audio and 5.5 MHz audio (European standard). I purchased such a set in 1964. Anything in the PX was available to servicemen of any rank. Really doubt that the PX sold such a set in the early 50's in Europe, because that was the post-war infancy of European TV. If sold in the US, it would not be anything special, but I do think the set has a rather unique style.

So, they managed to hold on to the original documents for 62 years and then just lost them in the last three years? Sad, if true. (That "$3000 appraisal" is certainly not, at least from any real appraiser.)
