Are any of those clear cabinet tvs collectible yet? I've got two of them..one's the 12" b/w and the other is a 13" color..someone told me they were made for prisons, but they're cool in their own way..
Any way, they're fun to have around..someone's got to save them..might as well be me

Yes, they are prison TVs, clear so that you can't hide contraband inside.

I imagine that pawnshops near prisons have a regular supply.

Greetings to the Forum:

I have always wondered about these things.... How many prison guards are sufficiently familiar with electronics to spot something that doesn't belong there? Especially since lots of TV chassis are sufficiently crowded that it is sometimes difficult to find components that one knows are there from the schematic.

Regards,

I imagine everyone is issued the same model TV so the guards get familiar with what they should look like.

There are several different brands that are used. Various styles throughout the years. Color and black and white ones.

With them, they are somewhat easy to tell if they have extra items. Plus they stuff they try to conceal are drugs and tattoo needles. Again those kind of stick out in the TV. What is cool are the new flat screen tvs. They have clear cabinets on them too.

The prison sets I saw & worked on were all normal sets. They had the speaker
removed & antenna. Ear jacks were installed. When a TV came in to do a
stretch they would open & check it. Often a tamper seal was put on.
I dont know what came first, the clear consumer sets or prison sets.
Whatever they did catch on.......

There were also consumer versions of some of the clear TVs.

I had a nice clean one for a while, color, 12”. When you turned it on it would come on with a blue screen that opened from the center like a Theater curtain.

I gave it back to the thrift store when I needed more room.

The only clear sets I have now are a couple of the Chinese cheapies, a 4” Rhapsody and a 5” that is shaped like an Egg.
