Hello,
Picked up this radio at a local Flea market a short while ago. I bought it because it looked like it had not been used a whole lot and all the relevant stuff appeared to be there. Here is the pic:

Of course it did not work, that may be the reason it was in such good condition.
When I have non working or intermittent radios like this the first thing I do (fresh battery with good contact and working switch) I scan the pc board with a powerfull magnifier and inspect all the joints. Sure enough a dry joint was located. With this joint resoldered the radio was back to life.

Some questions: This radio appears to have been sourced out of Utica, New York. Did GE actualy build them there?

Some google results indicated year of manufacture to be 1964, correct?

The radio uses one of those Hi-Z speakers of the "reed"? type. What is the consensus of opinion on these regarding frequency response, power out and quality?

I was wondering if there are any sites offering free diagarms of this model. I don't urgently need one but would like one for the file.

Regards.
David.

I also bought one of these in nearly pristine shape. Here's the thread:

Davemcm912r sent me a schematic of this radio.
I will gladly pass it along if you pm me with your address.

Not a bad little radio, but not great. Speaker is a little goofy, (i.e. sticks sometimes).
Biggest problem is the battery contacts, (mechanical) and the really cheap plastic case.

GE did build many, many models at their manufacturing plant on Broad Street in Utica. By about 1960 they started importing parts from Japan but still built the sets in Utica. Then by the mid-60's, most of the smaller sets were made in Japan but their distibution point and factory service facility remained in Utica.

Hello David,

Seems all the GE sets I had years ago with that "pin-drive" speaker have had somewhat "tinny" sound and I've seen a thread mentioning that the ferrous material in their's had disintegrated: http://www.antiqueradios.com/forums/vie ... 4&t=172030

Think my Step-father had the same model as you & Mitch, and it's still on upper shelf in Mom's closet---made a note to look when over there tomorrow... Will post if it is...

That's great to find one in that good of condition with its original box & documentation !

John

Well, it is a P-945B and after cleaning years of dust off of it & installing new batteries, it works just as I remember as a kid some 40+ years ago... Picks up local stations clearly with adequate volume, though with that characteristic "tinniness" of those "pin-drive" speakers... Only problem was very slight "scratchiness" in volume control which diminished after use...

Here are pics:

Yes I think the word "tinniness" sums it up.
