I purchased a Motorola model X48N portable transistor and after I replaced the caps and aligned the radio the dial belt broke. The belt is
probably over 50 years old and I guess that was its life span. If anyone knows where I can get a replacement please let me know. Also
if you have any suggestions on a substitute please let me know. The belt length is 5" and its diameter is 1/16". Any help would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE: Here is a new picture of the completed Motorola X48 ( 3rd picture down ).

If it were mine, I would clean the ends with alcohol and try supergluing it back together. Nothing to loose. If that doesn't work, well....

I appreciate your suggestion but I think that a permanent fix would be more appropriate because the belt is dry rotted and will most likely break in another spot.

Hi Greg,

I will first check my local auto store and hardware store to see if they have anything similar and if they don't I'll order the ones you mentioned.

Thanks for the great info.

I'll see if I have a belt in my o-ring assortment in
the shed.
Both of my Motorolas needed that drive belt.

Hi Jim,

I appreciate your help.

Probably a 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" diameter "O" ring should work.

Hi Greg, Thanks for the info. it sounds like it should work.

Today I will go to Lowes, Home Depot and Pep-Boys. Out of the 3 stores I hopefully should find a belt that works.

Very good Frank.

In the land of O-rings, it appears to be known as a...
Number-129

Who Knew...

Hi Jim,

That's OK, thanks for looking. I just went to Lowes and Home Depot and I ended up purchasing a "O" ring assortment for $2.98. There were two large "O" rings inside and I think that one of them will work. I will let everyone know if it works.

Hey Frank,

If o-ring is correct size or maybe a bit tighter, it should work.

Radio very similar to the X61E which both Jim & I have one of---looking forward to performance report !

Hi John,

Your right, the "O" was a little tight putting it on but it works great. I can not believe how HOT this receiver is and it also has pretty descent sound with plenty of volume to spare. I am very happy with it.

It's definitely a keeper.

i John,

I was probably listening to the same station. that you were listening to, was it 740 Zoomer radio ? Its a great station and I love the oldies that they play. Last night Zoomer radio was coming in so strong it sounded like a local station.

The Motorola X48 sure pulls in a lot of DX and sounds great.

Performance Update:

The other day I took a short trip to the Jersey shore and took alone my Motorola X48N to see how well it would perform in a noise free environment. My target test station is WRYM 840 AM which runs only 1KW and is located approximately 80 - 90 miles north in New Britain, CT. I was really surprised how strong WRYM came in on my Motorola X48N as compared to all of my other radios that I own. Hands up to the Motorola engineers, they really designed a good radio.

Hey Frank---Motorola made many excellent radios !

Glancing at the schematics, the X61 simply has one extra stage of audio amplification---the rest appears identical to the X48.

Be sure to post pics once you've shined it up !
