I've never seen one before this one and am also surprised there was not more interest for it. This was actually its second listing as it was a no-sale in a previous attempt. The opening bid was higher also in the first auction.

It looks like the serial number plate was sprayed over with aluminum paint.......and the front panel labels look poorly silkscreened.

It does appear a little henky.

I suppose it is possible that this was one of the SX-25 receivers manufactured for the War department. I have a copy of a 1/6/1948 Hallicrafters letter with my SX-25 stuff that explains these receivers were produced with lower band 4 sensitivity to meet the specifications of the War Department but the letter doesn't mention anything about them being in a rack mount format.

The side braces aren't of a style I have seen on other Hallicrafters rack mount radios and if it was a military contract I would have expected to see an ID plate on the front panel. I suspect this one was done by a fairly talented owner rather than something that came out of the Hallicrafters factory.

For what it's worth, Station Cast, the interception station in the Philippines at the beginning of the war, had two SX-25s in its inventory of receivers. They were destroyed before Corregidor surrendered in 5/6/1942.

I was very much considering buying it, and might have if that price had been a "buy it now".

But I didn't as it would not match the cabinet of my S-36 which is my normal "hi fi" music (FM)
source in my bedroom.
