HELP!

Before I go completely bonkers I need someone to help me with the dial cord on the subject radio.

I have the Photofact folder which shows only one of the 2 dial cords. It shows the cord for rotating the tuning capacitor but not for movement of the dial pointer. This diagram is apparently for the circular dial version of the radio.

I cannot figure how to wind the pointer dial cord so that it moves in the proper direction. That is, if the pulley on the capacitor is rotated from fully closed to fully open (550 KHz to 1600 KHz) the pointer moves from the right to the left of the scale. Thus, 550 KHz is at the right of the scale and 1600KHz is at the left of the scale. Everything is backwards.

What is going on here? Or is my thinking backwards?

Thanks for any help.

Jim

If the dial cord enters/exits the main pulley on the top now, move it to the bottom. If you post a picture showing the arrangement of the pulley, dial, which direction of the tuning cap is meshed, and which end of the dial is the low end, we can give more specific advice.

Two dial-string diagrams can be downloaded for free here...
https://www.radiomuseum.org/r/westingho ... _2157.html

Click a schematic page from the right-hand scrolling window, then again in the main center window.
Each page will be emailed to you immediately.
You can only download three pages a day + up to a maximum of ten every 30 days.

If you experience any downloading difficulties... see this→ viewtopic.php?p=2571007#p2570117
pdf attachments are not visible in junk email folders.

Greg,

You did it for me!

The download of the stringing shows the method used for a linear scale as well as the circular scale. My Photofact sheet showed only the circular.

Whoever has worked on this radio in the past really messed it up. They tried using 2 dial cords and that resulted in the tuning being backwards. No wonder I thought I was losing it. I also found out that the Westinghouse chassis was placed in a Philco cabinet.

The electronics work well after capping and re-alignment, and the cabinet is restored. Now to get some dial cord and re-string this thing and we're good to go.

Thanks again Greg.

Jim

Freshen up your vocabulary of four letter words. It seems to help.
