It's from a 60's console. One of the grill covers has what appears to be a water stain on it. I've been having a hard time finding a suitable replacement.

Thanks!

Hey Mac, Your grille cloth looks to me that it can be cleaned up. Carefully remove the cloth and let it soak in a flat pan in a weak soapy/bleach solution for a few minutes, then rinse with cold water, pat dry with a cotton towel on a flat surface. Repeat if it needs more contact time or a little stronger bleach. Spray the backside with spray starch and iron with a warm iron. I have had surprising results with this method. good luck. Barry

Thanks, I'll give it a try. What's the worst that happens, I ruin it?

Yeah for some reason finding good grille cloth right now is almost impossible. Hopefully it will turn around soon.

I would attach it to something to keep it from shrinking. I've had grill cloth get very small on me after wetting it  Use a staple gun and attach it all around the perimeter to a piece of thin plywood before you get it wet. Then let it dry all the way before removing it. Use lots of staples.

Another way you can do this is to keep it in the console, remove the speakers and use a wet/dry vac and a spray bottle of warm water. Spray it on and extract as you go. I've removed lots of stains from many different surfaces this way by spraying with soapy solution first, then extracting with water.

Buy a package of dye, and redye it. Simple and no rocket science involved.

There is a good thread somewhere here on the forum where a fellow ARF'er shows how he cleans grill cloth with a shallow pan filled with water and OxyClean and simply uses a paint brush to gently dab at and brush across the fibers. His examples looked excellent. I believe there was additional suggestion about holding it down appropriately as it dries to reduce any possible shrinkage, as others have already suggested here. Wish I could find that thread again...

Thanks, Tom. Going to try that this weekend. I've tried cleaning it with GoJo (it says it's good for stains, too!) with no luck.

I don't know if I'll be able to use Oxyclean without thinking of Billy Mays, may he rest in peace.

Mike
