I’m looking for what most would consider the best match (closest to original color) for a Zenith 5-S-127. Have some Mohawk toning lacquers and a local source to get what I might need. Don’t want to go too dark, which is easy to do. What do you believe to be the best original-like color match?
Thanks David

These are pictures of an original that may give you an idea.

Not very dark at all apart from the shoulders and foot (Mohawk Tone Toner Extra Dark Walnut for me). Wouldn't use Classic Toner on the sides: too hard to get even. Would prefer to use an oil based stain starting with it very thin and light. Might go for another heavier one or use the "artists oil paint method".

BTW too cold and damp for spraying anything most places unless you have a heated shop.

I would suggest after stripping and grain filler is sanded smooth I would stain entire cabinet medium dark walnut , Then get some Light golden oak (spray can toner ) spray a few coats of that over the walnut, that will give the factory look you want. Let dry then mask off cabinet leaving the shoulders and base trim exposed and spray on few light coats of extra dark walnut, not to dark you still want to be able to see some wood grain. Using Mohawk toners and stains, you may do the same with the wood trim ring escutcheon around the dial. Then use EZ vinyl clear sealer, let dry then sand with 240. Re clear with Mohawk clear, I use there clear top coat called Buffcoat, it will dry a semi gloss. Any lacquer clear will work, you don't have to use Mohawk, the colors I use are from Mohawk and may not be the same as using a different product.

I too have used the Classis Mohawk Lt Golden Oak over walnut stain, its one that works well as its so light it doesn't give the speck, or peppery look. Its No is M100-0415.

For me I would try the stain medium walnut first (and probably thinned) as its easier to darken but not go the other way !

The Ext Dark Walnut Tone Toner is M101-0209.

M102-0420 Gloss is a good finish.

I’m not sure if I’m getting conflicting advice, as some say use an oil based stain (MinWax?). If I were to use a wiping stain, I’d typically use a Mohawk lacquer based stain, but as of the last few years, I’ve been trying to get away from it and use the M100- toning lacquers. Fred, are you still using the neutral color Timbermate grain filler? I’ve been using the walnut colored Timbermate and like it. I’ve been using the Mohawk Light Golden Oak over darker toning lacquers and it gives it a very nice, rich color enhancement that I like. Fred, when you said “I would stain entire cabinet medium dark walnut...” are you referring to the Mohawk M100-0207, or something else?

Thanks!

I don't know the product number off the top of my head, wiping stain by Mohawk medium dark walnut , I use the neutral grain filler by Timber mate. I always stain my cabinets and use toners. The neutral grain filler can be used for any color stain. I tried the oil base stain and it takes to long to dry. I don't like to mix match different products. So I stick with one product system that's works the best for me, that's Mohawk. The results speak for themselves.

By oil based stain I mean ones that can be thinned with White Spirit, think that's Mineral Spirits over there. Dries quick for me although I always leave it over night.

Never seen Miniwax over here. Colron : http://www.wood-finishes-direct.com/pro ... d-wood-dye
Don't think I can get Mohawk stain either, hard enough to get toners and lacquers :(

Mohawk stains will dry very quickly , with in 15 minutes you can then spray on you lacquer sanding sealer. No need to wait for that amount of time after staining. The sealer I do let gas out some before I resand for the lacquer top coats. To bad you cant buy all of the Mohawk products ,

Not in a hurry Fred: overnight doesn't matter. Could maybe do it sooner but its my method and as you said stick with what you know works and it works well. Got loads of time.

Got a quart of medium dark walnut from my Mohawk distributor. I was going to buy 2 quarts when they told me that it would be $36 for two and that I could buy a gallon for $45. Since I've not used the medium dark walnut before, I opted for 1 quart... can always buy a gallon. Over the years, I've paid $5.75 for rattle cans, but almost a year ago the owner sold out (I think the new owners consist of several people, including the Mohawk rep. Joel Raggo) and the can price has gone up to $6.19, which is still a good price.

Stripped the cabinet last night and was amazed that there was little to no finish on it. Cleaned it up with mineral spirits and lacquer thinner. Will get to the wood grain filling later today. Fred, are you staining the knobs the same color as the cabinet? Doing anything special with the knobs??

Thanks David

Sometimes I will stain the nobs and seal and clear, the sealer will help fill the pores a lot better than just straight lacquer clear. You also can spray any color toner on them then seal and clear. Its all in how you want them to look. Often just sealing and clearing them will do the trick, that's after there stripped and cleaned.

The base and the ring around the dial are BLUE.

The same pigment that was used for the inside was used, just more of it.

The BLUE color should have been seen while stripping the original.

Finished the cabinet last night (already had the chassis restored). I did a little accent around the cabinet's dial opening, which I like... To me, I'm pleased with it AND APPRECIATE all of the help. THANKS!!

WOW Dave

That looks great!

Is the ABC a decal or gold paint stamp?

Barry,

It was a decal I had kept. Guess they're still available.

See 'ya.
