File comment: This is a lot nicer wood veneer than what was on the cabinet before. An up grade if you ask me. Owner will be amazed, does not have to be factory looking.

Hi Fred, beautiful work as usual....

What is the filler you used in the 1st picture?

And what glue do you use when replacing large sections of veneer?

Thank you!

Finished up cabinet, I used contact cement on this one. High strength #90 3m , don't ever use contact cement on paper back veneer especially when using lacquer clear, it may try in lift a few years down the road. I always use wood on wood veneer, I am using yellow glue on a lot of veneer jobs as well. I use polyester body filler , bondo for filler.

Im going to start using yellow glue on all veneer work, this job i had ran out of yellow glue and I had 2 news cans of 3m high strengh left over, so i used them up. I have radios that i have used contact cement on 7 years ago and still holding tight, but still, yellow glue is the way to go or hide glue.

Yellow glue as far as I know is commonly used for veneer and can be activated after is has dried using heat from an iron. Ironing on veneer is done using yellow glue for many folks. I am not a veneer expert but learning a lot from doing it, reading and getting on the internet. I would love to some day be able to do any veneer job from scratch and have it turn out perfect.

Thanks Fred, you are doing great work. Bet you could do a perfect job with all veneering now having so much experience.

Have to replace the veneer on the stepped sides of a cabinet that are only about 2" wide and the depth of the cabinet. Wondered if I could have everything prepped and glue the strip directly? No iron, just treating it as you would a piece of wood. Idea is to get a piece of thick Perspex cut and clamp it across the whole cabinet with long clamps. Would it work?

thanks Gary

Fred I wouldn't give up on contact cement, I have cabinets that were veneered 20 years ago using Weldwood contact cement and still looking good. I still use the yellow on smaller areas on a cabinet and of coarse the joints.
