I'm restoring a Crosley Model 125. The chassis is dark grey in color. As I was cleaning it up I noticed a couple of rust spots and put some phosphoric acid on them to remove. The acid also removed the dark grey, revealing a shiney metal underneath. Question: is the dark grey some kind of coating or is it some kind of oxidation that I should remove to make the whole chassis shiney. I don't have a picture of what a 125 looked like origially so I can't tell.
Thanks in advance,
Dave
------------------
The dark grey is probably the original plating. However, phosphoric acid will leave behind a coating of its own so the rust shouldn't reappear too rapidly. I'd say to leave the original plating intact as much as possible because it will be much more durable.
-Bill M

------------------
Thanks Bill - sort of what I thought, but wanted to double check. The rest of the chassis is in real good shape for it's age. I really didn't want to touch to much on this one. Thanks again.
dvw
------------------
