Does anyone know where I can find a complete set of cards for the Hickok Cardmatic 121 Mutual Conductance Tube Tester?

Thanks,

Try a search on ebay for "Hickok cardmatic".

121s for some reason never caught on, and rarely turn up. You could try the chap who makes new 123 cards, I think his name is Stewart Kleinschmidt but do a search as that is from memory. He at least might know how many cards constitute a full set for the 121, even if you don't want to spring a lot of money loose to buy them from him.

I picked up a 121 recently and was lucky to get all the original paperwork and complete set of basic cards (322 I believe). The paperwork included an "Index of Available Cards".

What I find strange is that the although the 121 has the old 4, 5, 6 and 7 pin sockets, I can't find any mention of cards for tubes that fit in those sockets!

I've been meaning to contact Stewart, but haven't gotten around to it. His contact info is in this thread.

I finally got around to scanning my documentation.

Group 5 - Factory Pack (the 322 cards that came with mine)

Cardmatic Card order Form (list of all available cards)

I'll take a couple hundred at 15 cents each please :D

P.S. I just spoke to Stewart - no luck on older tube cards for the 121 :(

I have just acquired a Hickok 121 tester and there is a sheet that indicates there
was a second case of over 5000 cards available.
the sheet comes from

http://www2.gdi.net/~padgett/cardh.thm

Hope this helps.

I just watched and commented on your uTube video Bob(?) on the 121. Yes, cameras have gotten much better.
Just got done recapping this one, and replacing all the resistors around the rectifiers, every one of those were 15meg or open,
but not damaged "looking". All the ones near the center test area are right on. Power it up, get the solenoid release to read the card
but no line adjust or meter movement, though I did forget to replace the meter cap's, will do that in a few. Rewired radial caps to replace the 4 section,
on to a strip. Thinking of replacing the selenium rectifiers, though they are not shorted to neg or ground, have to check their outputs.
Mine came with the set of cards, including the calibration card, but no extras or any paperwork, which is hard to find, bought a manual on eBay with my
eBay bucks, so it felt free. :)

Here's a link to the schematic. https://flic.kr/p/qrduje

Could you be more specific about the resistors that were bad? Which resistors around which diodes ? Sounds like something bad happened to it for them to be open or very high.

best shown with pics. The one thing that does not match up to schematics, (mine is a series 3, no tube inside. The schematics I have are the only ones posted), but seems to match beside the negative connection of the 4 20uf caps goes to the .5 tube cap (now yellow film cap) so its yellow wire goes to the negative leads of the 4 caps, tied at terminal strip to black wire where it goes to meter side of case and ties at that 2 terminal strip to NEG. it was tough to fit all that in there, side clearance is tight there.

So here, all the electro's and resistors here are new, 1 and 2 watt metal film used.

one thing in the 1st pic of the meter back, I'd like to replace the 2 diodes, SD91, (thinking of using 1N4158's) the one has an oil inside the clear tube, not from me
And I notice in the my pic, the black wire to the cap's NEG looks unsoldered practically, will have to check that. Its easy to forget one when you wire a few in at once. :)

Looking at youR photo's, there appears to be three terminals on your meter
Is this correct, I have three terminals, but only two on the meter itself.
This might be my problem, The meter I have is for the Hickok model 121, but may be later version.

Wondering if this is a possibility, is there a 2 terminal and a 3 terminal version of metering for this tester

yes it's a 3 terminal, seems the 2 on the side are NEG, will verify with ohm meter to be sure, I was curious on that myself as the schematic show 2 terminals.
but there are variations, always, part of the fun

all 3 terminals isolated from each other at the meter, up to 2k ohms tested, the resistor shown is 10k, which tests out to slightly over 10k

I think that 3rd terminal is not connected internally, and is being used only as a tie point for the 10K resistor.

yes that 3rd terminal seems to be a tie point. Going to replace diodes this weekend, starting with the two
on the meter as the one has some fluid inside the plastic tube, then test again, 1 repair at a time with the diodes.

It does sound a little strange that they wound place a third terminal on a meter
just for a tie point. Now my replace meter does not have this tie point or third terminal.

I would love to get this unit functioning.
the Mechanical portion does work fine and the meter is reading some thing.
So most of it is function thus far. Just have to spend more time with it I think.

It is the third terminal that is bugging me. The schematic does not indicate
and connection for the 10K resister, just the terminal in mid air that is off.

It's a tie point. Mine is the same. They had to connect that 10K somewhere. The wire on that tie point goes to the DC balance trimmer as the schematic shows.

The goo inside the plastic tube over the diode is normal. See it many times. Probably the plastic breaking down slowly over the years.

I think that plastic an early type of vinyl, not sure. But whatever that substance is that it is breaking down into, I don't trust. So I carefully cut those off and treat them like toxic waste.

You're lucky if you have a 121 that actually matches any published schematic. None of mine do.

I just saw this thread, and the links are inop. It's a very old thread, but if the card inventory is still available, I'd love to have it. I have a lot of 121 cards, and I'm curious how complete my set is.

Thanks,
Erik
