This phonograph is driving me crazy. The audio is distorted. If I Play a CD through the amp the sound is quite good. If I play a record the audio is distorted. I have tried a new cartridge but no help. The color code on the cartridge wiring is not as I expected. The red and white wire are diagonal to each other. I expected them to be across from each other. Could that cause my pro blem? It doesn't look like anyone soldered on the cartridge holder. The cartridge/needle combination is an Astatic 14BT.

What type of player/preamp do you have?

Phono requires extra amplification, so will have it's own dedicated circuit. It is quite likely some components have aged to the point the circuit doesn't work right.
