Bert, I spent an hour last night writing up the procedure, then when I posted it, the General Error struck and it was all lost. But now I have a better idea. See if you have room under the chassis for three 20 uF 450 volt capacitors and one 20 uF 50 volt cap, or any similar value. The three caps are each around 3/4" thick and 1 1/2" long. This would be much cheaper than a new quad capacitor. Then you won't have to remove the old quad electrolytic, the vibrator or its transformer, they can just be there for appearance. More details later. Don

hi don. i was going to pm you in the event you didnt see my last post as the topic got kicked so far down. i did pm meade. i did exactly what you thought, i had to get a little creative in the location, but the lytics are all under the chassis. i will replace all the remaining 'bumblebees' after i figure out how to get it to AC. By flyingturns after looking at the schematic for both models 801 and 802 and reading the section on vibrators in 'elements of radio servicing' 2nd edition 1955, it seems the vibrator puts out about 215-250 volts AC. this may seem ignorant, but why couldnt i simply hook up a power supply in place of the vibrator? Bert, Indeed, you are way ahead of me! The set will work if you disconnect the vibrator transformer and hook up the Edcor transformer red leads to the 7Y4 plates, & red/black CT wire to chassis ground, and connect one yellow 6.3 volts AC wire directly to the tube heaters, the other yellow to ground. (disconnecting the input filter-The filter was to get rid of generator and ignition interference). The brown wires on the Edcor could be just left taped up, un-used.
EDIT: You said you wanted to use a field coil speaker, that simply connects in place of the 1K resistor between the first and second electrolytic capacitors, then you move the output transformer CT wire from the first to the second capacitor. This is needed so all the plate current will go through the field coil. Considering the condition of a 70 year old FC speaker, a newer PM speaker would make a longer-lasting solution, and you can always get more PM speakers.
It looks like they changed the resistor between the second and third electrolytic from 1K to 6800 ohms.
Rewire the power switch to the primary of the Edcor transformer. Since this is a metal case with a metal dial face, I would use a three-wire grounded cord, green wire to the chassis, and run a wire from the transformer case to the chassis, and to the speaker frame to prevent any shock hazards.

Thanks Don! i think i will switch to a PM speaker. when i get the transformer i will pm you if i have questions. ill still post on here but by then it will be down the list quite a bit. im still not sure about every wire location but ill get it. i wish the original one wouldnt have burned so bad. i could have followed it better. you can see the vibrator, transformer, and most all the caps and resistors that would have been located in the power block had been removed when the radio was changed over to ac line power. the literature i have shows that this radio had at least 4 runs and there where several changes from run to run. Bert, OK, once the new transformer is connected, I can give you a few points to measure so we can adjust resistors and voltages if necessary. An in-line fuse might be a good addition to the primary wiring. Leave the extra brown winding wire at full length, in case you want to use it in the future. Don

Great Don. i have never added a fuse to a radio. what size and type do you recommend? i assume you refer to an inline fuse. bert

Bert, I am guessing a 1 Amp Slow-blow fuse will do, either 125 or 250 volt rating, not an automotive fuse. Fuses and inline fuse holders are even available at Rat Shack. Don

Well...........its finally up and running! this radio is strong. the new edcor trans works perfectly and the reception is crisp, clear, and loud. i will finish the recap and resistors now and post a pic once its back in the finished cabinet. a HUGE thanks to don (bikenswim) and meade (MAG) for your help and input. i will use a high quality PM speaker instead of the old field coil. i still cant believe how nice this radio sounds. Mt g'parents had one all our growing up years... and I'm hoping to get one in the future. Sure sounds like there can be lots of e-work involved.
Nice work and result - divad

Nice work and result - divad Now that we know what Edcor transformer to use, and have a good schematic, future sets like this will be just capacitor replacement and a resistor or two, so if you can find one that did not burn up, buy it. Don

as usual, don is correct. there was just a chassis on ebay for 175.00!!!! a bit high for my taste. also, right now there is a complete radio but its the motorola version, basically the same for........wait for it..............650.00!!!! its unrestored and he states the buttons dont work. sheez, i had no idea people thought these were worth that kind of money. i added up my total expenses for this radio, including the 40.00 purchase price and i have 208.00 into it. of course thats no labor. http://www.ebay.com/itm/MOTOROLA-CHAIRS ... 4ab354acfci am really enjoying sitting at night in the dark, listening to the old radio show channel on xm radio on it. bert

Nice looking chairside radio.
I may be asking for some advice from everyone out there, as I just got one of these chairside radios. I just opened the cabinet and guess what, it looks like the transformer is bad. Looks overheated and some wax like substance is coming out of the transformer.
I was reading your past postings and wondering if you did, indeed, use a Edcor XPWR044-120 Xformer and if so how did it fit and how did it work. Any words of advice, on this radio, would be greatly appreciated.
Joe

Joe, look at the pictures in the Jan. 22 post. The Edcor transformer is the large blue transformer on the cabinet base, just behind the speaker. At this size, it can easily handle the load. I was the one who suggested it. Don
