I've listened to OTR in the car for years. It sure makes a trip go easier.
So I'm wondering, what are some of the best individual episodes you ever heard? I'll start.
My favorite show is Gunsmoke - super well done and great writing.
They made 480 episodes, but my personal favorite aired on Dec 6, 1952. It's called "I don't know". You can download it here - you can download all of them for that matter:

This one is different in that William Conrad plays his normal part but also plays the role of a narrator. The story starts off with some good clean Chester fun, and ends up with one of the saddest and most chilling endings I've ever heard. You won't see it coming.
What are your favorite episodes from any show?

Don't know if I could pick one single episode as the "Best" ever. Look how much controversy the AMERICAN FILM INSTITUTE engenders when the try to pick the top one hundred films, comedies, musicals, etc.

That said, I would certainly put Suspense's broadcast of Agnes Moorehead in "Sorry, Wrong Number" right up at the top of the list.

The Lux Radio theater version of "Laura" is great too.
The Abbott and Costello Show is my all time fav. Just about any episode. Silly stuff, but I crack up the whole time!

I listen to Bob Merritt's station during the day, via SSTRAN and Philco 60.
Of the many programs, seems my favorites have turned out to be Gunsmoke and Dragnet. Can't pick any particular episode however. This Is Your FBI is also good, and I'm quickly gaining respect for one that's not mentioned often -- I Was A Communist For The FBI. I won't elaborate politically but the correlation between their operations in the 1940's, and events of today, is intriguing.
As for Sorry Wrong Number, are you referring to the original broadcast where Agnes Moorehead screamed and fainted on the air, or any of the later versions? Suspense repeated this story many times over its run. I've got the original, and the episode of Banquo's Chair the next week, where the announcer explained what had happened the week before.
This afternoon I heard Suspense, Most Dangerous Game. I've heard the story many times, but this version is a classic. Another one that strikes me as well done was Around The World In 80 Days on Mercury Theatre, one week before the War Of The Worlds.
I also like, and have, Your Hit Parade. The music is well arranged and well performed. Unfortunately it appears not many have survived, and of those that have, most are in rather poor condition. That poorness comes from things like tape hiss, muffled 10th generation recordings, digital skipping, and the like. Where are the transcriptions -- can we copy them again???

I have a tie..."Mars is Heaven" on X minus one or Dimenson X (not sure which) and "The Hangman's Rope" on Hall of Fantasy.
As an aside...Gary - I have come to enjoy I Was A Communist for the FBI by hearing it on the streaming stations as well. Tales of the Texas Rangers is another standby favorite. Always a good episode, it seems.

My best all-round series of programs was Horizons West, the radio docu-drama of the Lewis and Clark expedition staring the talented character actor Harry Bartel as Meriweather Lewis and John Anderson as William Clark. http://www.archive.org/details/HorizonsWest--de Mick - WB4LSS

Quote: As an aside...Gary - I have come to enjoy I Was A Communist for the FBI by hearing it on the streaming stations as well. About the only thing I would like to have seen done differently, as a Monday morning quarterback, would be to emphasize the actual strategies and goals the Communists were working toward. Things such as getting into universities and brainwashing students into staging protests, or pressuring local/state/federal leaders into working with them, etc. To me this is the most eye-opening aspect of the show, and such things are indeed brought up, but the biggest thrust of the drama is how Matt Svetic is constantly being scrutinized and his fears of getting caught. I suppose this is indeed accurate, coming from Matt's perspective, but the most chilling part is the tactics they use(d) with the American public to achieve their goals. I won't elaborate as it can be political, but it's interesting to see the things they were planning well over 50 years ago.

I too find "I was a Communist for the FBI" to be rather intriguing. It feels a slight bit close to home, as I grew up in a government town created by the Manhattan project where fearing and watching for the Commies was just a way of life. Then there's "Federal Agent" and "Cloak and Dagger" which I find appealing in the same vein.
My favourite? That is really a hard one. I do think Gunsmoke is amongst the best, but as a sci-fi fan, I also believe X-1 is nearly it's equal. I believe I've heard every episode at least a dozen times over the years. My computer has been playing them in random sequence virtuously continously (along with thousands of other OTR and Music etc) for almost 13 years.
Lately I've really been enjoying Bob Hope in various shows, including "Command Performance". I have a completely new respect for Bob Hope, and pretty much feel he is the greatest comedian and entertainer of all time.

I've accumulated so many OTR shows I doubt I'll be able to hear them all in one lifetime, especially since I often fall asleep during my prime listening time. So all I can offer are recently heard shows that I've enjoyed more than most. I thought the X Minus One episode 'The Castaways' and also 'Dr Grimshaw's Sanitarium' had very interesting plots. A show from the early 80's that I enjoy is called Nightfall. The episode titled 'Where Does the News Come From' was very good: http://www.thenightfallproject.org/tag/frank-perry/

I've always enjoyed the Suspense episode "On A Country Road" starring Cary Grant. It really epitomizes the whole concept of "suspense" and I dare anyone to listen to it on a dark night riding down a country back road......CREEPY!

OK I'll bite. I enjoy all the Sherlock Holmes, all the Amos and Andy and all the X-1/Dimension X series. Can't pick a single best one from them. One comedy act that tops the list of laughs is The Bickersons with Don Ameche and Frances Langford. My most memorable one is where she bets $50 on a horse to win only to have it come in second. After John tears up the ticket and throws the pieces out the window he asks her well, which one won? She says it had a funny name: "Disqualified"
