A guy I work with pulled this one from the trash and gave it to me the other day, Well I was not too excited in the fact that it was a transistor set but it was the thought that counts,, Well I think this is an early transistor set, Nice big wiring diagram with it and it has a reasonable size Output trans and speaker, I wondered why the cord was cut flush with the back ? ? ?
The dial lights up real nice and the radio actually performed pretty darn good and all the Lytics still look ok with no bulging,
Now the question is, AM/FM work just as they should, BUT the AFC is silent,, Seemed odd to me, But anyone have any ideas?

When you say "the AFC is silent" do you mean that when you switch to the AFC mode...the radio goes silent? No hiss or sound of any kind?

AFC filter cap may be a dead short? - on second thought, not likely. Maybe failure of the oscillator due to bias being applied to the varicap?
Does it de-tune, can it be re-tuned, or, is it whole-heartedly silent?

Look here for some reading on the matter:

BTW, that page is from here:

A very cool and informative site regarding transistors and radio. 8)

Quiet like there are no stations, Back ground his like between stations, Just none there, FM does not drift, Works great and looks nice lit up.

Would that be akin to leaving your book outside the dog?
:? Oh, you mean to leave the AFC off. Oops!

I'm thinking that the local oscillator must be failing (upon switching AFC on). That's assuming that things are wired right. That would likely indicate that the varactor bias is radically changing. So, question is: What is the AFC voltage? It should be zero when tuned to center frequency of stations.

Edit - typos

Those era Panasonics are worth repairing. They were under National and made quite well and solid performers. I have three portables from that era because they were made so well and they all still work. I'd like to get one like the one you have-- nice looking, has cool features.
