On my set I injected a signal and worked my way back to the tuner to figure out where it died, since I got something all the way back it figured it had to be the tuner.

Sometimes I just wiggle or pull the i.f. tubes one at a time and see where the static stops, I then figure the problem is between that tube and the last one that gave a response.
May not be the most reliable method but it's fast.

I notice all I get is a faint hum out of the loudspeaker, that varies when I raise and lower the volume. No static. Because I hear a hum out of the speaker cone, does that mean the audio output transformer is operational?

I think whatever is holding the set back is something trivial, IMHO.

Do you hear a buzz if you turn on your soldering iron and briefly touch it to the center terminal of the volume control?

No, it's a great time to hit the sack.

Found out something interesting. When you switch to TV on the Input Control, the display backlights go out, of course. But, when you push in the Tone Control Knob, the backlights come on.

Ah...screw electronic troubleshooting. Time for Cabinet work...











One coat of Danish Oil. I'll do one more when it dries overnite.

Time to get the rf tracer and go stage by stage, see where you loose the signal. Best of luck.

Yup. A good buzz.

The buzz suggests that components downstream of that point -- output tube, transformer, speaker -- are working, so you can shift your focus upstream.

The TV's sound section is not much different than an FM radio and you can use straightforward techniques to trace where an injected signal is not getting through. does the rastor have snow or is it just blank? if snow the osc tube working if just blank then suspect the osc tube.

I had a problem somewhat like that, wiggled the heck out of the osc tube eventually it started working. That was the crosley with the inductor tuner, I cant recall if I ended up with a new tube or what the deal was exactly.

By Osc Tube you mean thye 6J6 in the Tuner Section. I checked that. All the tubes in the Tuner are new.

I would start by checking the voltages at that tube. this is when a TV analyst is great as you can inject RF/IF/composite and narrow it down. If the radio is dead and I presume its a spit system, then you can narrow it down to before the pick off point which is prob pretty close to the tuner. If that is the case I would still focus on the osc, Try a lot of tube wiggling and voltage checking.

I have a philco split chassis set that won't pass a signal if the OSC tube is in the wrong spot in it's socket. Whenever it dies I go and wiggle the osc to fix it. Some sets are finicky like that even after socket cleaning.

Sounds like the contacts in the socket are loose and not putting enough pressure on the tube pins. Sometimes you can bend the contacts in the socket and tighten them.

What did you clean your power transformer with to make it look new?

I did the voltage check. They came out fine.

Spray Nine. Wash, Rinse, Blow Dry, Bake in Oven 2-3 hours @125 F.
