hi i have a vintage general electric model 351-19a battery/9vdc operated radio. i was wondering if anybody can send a picture diagram to restring a dial cord although i do not have dial cord but is it ok to use string that is thin as the dial cord if it works :?: when i turned the dial knob i heared a snap thats when i knew the cord was not good so how do i replace this.

the model number for the dial cord diagram is: 351-19a
brand name: general electric

Is it possible for you to post a picture of the radio? I don't know if anyone else is having any luck, but I am not finding that model number for a General Electric radio anywhere at the moment.

By the way, plain old string probably won't work very well. It's too stretchy and too slippery. You are looking for something like braided nylon with a strong non-stretch core. If you do a Google seach for "dial cord" there are a lot of sources. You should be able to get something adequate for $5 or less.

When you are working on a reply, right below the Submit button there is a Browse and Download button. You can browse to a location on your PC where the picture is located (probably JPG file), Select the specific file, then select OK. Then select Download which will cause the file to be loaded along with your posting. I believe picture cannot exceed 800 X 400 pixels (?) so if you get an error that says the picture is too big you might have to scale it down to be accepted (I think it tells you the maximum size allowed).

I suggest posting a picture because others might recognize the radio and be able to help you.

800 pixels in the biggest direction, and 256 KB.

You might try oldradiofixerupperguy on the Internet. He has thousands of dial string diagrams. I looked for the one for your model number and could not find it, but he invites people to contact him. Good luck.

Go into a photo-editing program. Set the size so that the max pixel dimension is 800 or less and it's 72 DPI. Then save as "jpeg", and reduce the quality until the size is about 250 kb. Then post.

If you want, and are not in a hurry, send them to me at buckbw AT pacbell DOT net, and I can convert them. But it's a good skill to learn for yourself.

Yes, but they are not too big - very small, in fact. I did no manipulation at all, they are all tiny.

Judging by the photos, it is not in very good shape, and given that, it could be a 10-15.00 radio. You could check ebay, buy searching the full model name and number, for sold sets.

Look for braided fishing line. Works great as dial cord.

Sorry, I didn't see an listing in the Sams index for that model.

Is the original cord still inside the set? If it is, please make a note (the best you can) as to how it is connected.
Newer models can get tricky, you have a tuning knob at the top and the slide rule/dial and tuning cap wheel are probably 90 degrees to each other.
The Spiderwire or other non-stretch fishing line should work. I think it ill need to be tight on those newer radios.
WalWart should carry fishing line that will work.

Your other set should be pretty easy to get going with a recap.
