Today, I got my insurance bill from State Farm. It's ~$600/yr. I'm 19, with 2 vehicles currently insured through them. One, a 1994 Town Car, and another, a 1993 GMC.
This particular bill is a new one from State Farm, with an "itemized" list of what each vehicle costs me.
The car, made in 1994, costs me $123.00 year. Not bad at all, in my opinion.
The truck, costs me $490.00 A YEAR. $490!!
Both vehicles have ABS, and both would be written off in they were in a moderate accident. The only thing I can think of, is that the car has dual air bags, whereas the truck has none. That didn't come into play until 1995, I think.
Can no air bags make a $350 a year difference? That's insane! I put 2,900 miles on the truck last year. That's it, Not even enough to justify an oil change, really. $500.
I fully intend to go up there Monday and see what can be done about that. Any opinions? Does that seem plausible?

This is why I'm not driving. I've already saved over $1000 in insurance alone.
Good luck.

Yes, but I can sell the truck, buy a mint 1994-1996 Buick Roadmaster Estate wagon, and insure both vehicles for $250.00 a year. It's worth that to me, enjoy your bike.

That seems quite high, for a truck and for your age. The only time it should be high is if you have numerous citations ,have been in accidents or have lost your license a few times

MY record is spotless, no issues whatsoever. Should have mentioned that also. Good student discount, etc. etc.

Your age is why it is high. For multiple cars they put your high rate on one vehicle and a normal rate on the other.
A few years back I had 3 cars and a teenage driver (male under 25 are the worst). My old truck 1 - rated as there was no teen driver My old truck 2 - same as above. My wifes new SUV ---- $$$$$$$$$$$$

Could also be just an example of some "experience/loss" rating for that particular vehicle that has nothing to do with you at all. Some vehicles just cost a fortune to insure, even when they are not new. But I agree with the idea it could be because you have two vehicles and they are giving you a break on the second one.
Consider yourself fortunate not to live smack in the middle of a major metropolitan area. Some people around here are paying $1000 to $2000 a year to insure an older vehicle if a young person is driving it, even if it is the second or third one on the policy. No only that, but Michigan requires by law that everyone must have insurance to buy license plates so the insurance companies have drivers living in the city where rates are the highest over a barrel.

Yeah, that sounds right. The truck is probably down as your primary vehicle, and the other car as "pleasure" vehicle.

$1400 a year for a 10 year old GM Envoy. One driver, me.
But I think you are missing something. Not too far from here, all the illegals drive vehicles with North Carolina plates. North Carolina must stick them in Cracker Jack boxes. By law, the police cannot stop a vehicle unless they have seen something like running a red light. They are prevented from stopping a vehicle that they see regularly, even though all vehicles driven by people who live here over 90 days are supposed to be registered by NY State.
So the police can do nothing, even though they know the law is broken.
Therefore the illegals drive with impunity. Insurance? Surely you kid! If they get into an accident, they simply run away, abandoning the vehicle on the spot. Or drive away, and then abandon the vehicle several blocks away. That allows you time enough to pull the plates and ditch them.
Which means people who buy insurance are paying for covering the accidents of those who don't. Don't kid yourself, there is enough corporate slight-of-hand to move the money around.

Ah, I see.
I wasn't trying to sound "ungrateful", I just figured if a 18 year old luxury car was $123.00, a 19 year old truck would be the same or less, that's all.

That is about what i pay for 2 vehicles, one 18 and the toyota is 26yo. One or the other is listed as primary. You will not get insurance much cheaper than the 600 +change you are paying..

Question: Which is your "primary" vehicle and how many miles do you drive a year?
I pay more on my 21 year old Miata than I do on the '06 MGM, even though we (ball and chain and I) drive about 6-7 thou miles a year all combined on all 4 vehicles with no tickets/losses....

Good question. I think I put the truck as the primary (although it never gets driven) and the car as the other, because I figured (at the time) it would be cheaper to have the truck as the primary, with it being a truck, and oldest.

I presume we are talking just liability insurance here. The truck may be considered a "work" unit. For a while Wife Sandi was a waitress. The car she drove was considered a work vehicle. "Waitress" was a red flag too. Odd work hours presumed. Increased risk. Rather steep premiums. Other cars were not a big deal. That stuff was "pleasure" vehicle mode. My agent did suggest that the wrecker boom on my 58 GMC not be mentioned however. They bite you hard on one vehicle, but show kindness and understanding about everything else. Well known sales technique.
I need $300 for this hubcap. Buy this one, and I'll sell you 3 more for 5 bucks each! Customer soon forgets the 300 dollar one, and obsesses on the 3 cheap ones. SOLD!
Keep in mind that it's all simple to figure with the printed word, but with verbal communication it's easy to be distracted by this and that.
Call several agents and ask for a printed quote.

William, I think it has more to do with that you are 19 years old and male! Insurance rates are sky high for males under 25 years old!!

$600 yearly for a nineteen year old male with two full sized vehicles? I wouldn't complain or even ask a question about it. Leave very well alone!
