The only other time I had to file was when I made the mistake of buying a catalin from He Who Shall Not Be Named that turned out to have been covered with maroon paint as a "restoration". On that one I opened a dispute immediately, which was worth it for the cries of aggrieved, righteous indignation that it prompted.

Bob

You're kidding...He actually represented a painted radio as being a Catalin?

Someday perhaps you might be able to display his protests...Would love to see them, lol.

Ugh...I just as soon forget the whole experience. :x

There were actually several long threads about 4 years ago in which this transaction ignited a fairly major flame war. Lord Voldemort was defending himself incognito as "relic" on ARF (This became apparent when he posted details of the transaction that only he and I would have known about) aided by his radio buddy "dogtired" (a collector who was also a veterinarian, hence the ARF name). Their basic idea is that if you fall for a catalin radio scam, you deserve what you get. Unfortunately, I think this thread and most others featuring relic were lost when ARF changed software and servers a few years ago. It's too bad, because some of the other posts by relic were interesting to say the least, referring to catalin buyers as "morons" etc. OTOH to the credit of Voldemort, he did issue me a full refund almost immediately. Neither relic nor dogtired was heard from again on ARF after this episode.

My final word is that you know you're in trouble when you unbox a catalin radio and see little flecks of maroon paint in the wrapping.

Here is a new twist to my story.
I telephoned UPS in regard to the status of my the claim (which I initiated).
Their response was that no information can be given to anyone other than the shipper.

Here is what I must do.
I must return the parcel within 14 days. If I do not hear from UPS by the end of the day Friday, I will mail the parcel back to the shipper as per his return policy on Saturday morning.

Why are you still messing around directly with UPS? Filing the ebay claim should handle this.

Exactly!

I think that he's trying to be a nice guy; unfortunately the other side is less than forthright, although he can't seem to recognize that.

Simply contact eBay, and ask for a UPS prepaid return label. Pack it up and send it back, and once notification of receipt reaches eBay, the entire purchase and shipping cost will be refunded.

+1 Epay is good if you need parts for a project, other then that between UPS & Epay its spells trouble.

This Saturday morning, July 7, 2012, the radio in its original packaging was returned to sender via US Postal Service.
Delivery confirmation, return of merchandise receipt, and a green return post card requiring a signature was used for proof of shipment.

Was that postage and packing paid for by the seller?

My normal experience is that UPS sends the seller a label so that you can return the item without cost, usually to some type of claims office of theirs.

Then they find an excuse not to honor the insurance.

Return postage paid by me, the buyer. Also, Ebay sent me an email especially highlighting the sellers refund policy. Return within 14 days at buyer's expense.
So, I followed the policy guidlines.
I added the del conf, green return card, and returned merchandise receipt.

This is being twisted around, and you are getting boned.

Complain to eBay that this was received NOT AS DESCRIBED, and once delivery confirmation is received by them, you insist that your entire payment to include shipping BOTH WAYS be refunded.

There is a big difference between his "return policy", which would assume that the item was received as pictured and described in his listing and there was "buyer's remorse", and your receiving something destroyed because of inadequate packing.

Don't let them get away with this.

I agree you are being screwed.

That return policy only holds true if you decided you just didn't want it or like it.
But that cannot be applied when you receive damaged goods.

REMEMBER.. the seller has the total responsibility to deliver the goods to you as described in perfect condition.
If the seller fails that.. you are entitled to a full refund including shipping costs.
If the seller wants it returned he must pay the return shipping.

Stand up for yourself.
Call Paypal and Ebay and ask for a full refund.
Open a case against him.
Not as Described.

Received this message from Ebay, today, Sunday.

Good news! We let the seller know the item wasn't as described, and the seller issued you a full refund. This case is now closed.

Refund information:
A full refund of $102.90 was issued on Jul 08, 2012. The refund includes the purchase price plus original shipping and was issued to the same payment method you used to pay for the item.

Now, I will buy another radio with the money.

That's good... now how about your return shipping costs?

From my experience on returns the buyer has to pay the return shipping costs as per ebay/paypal rules.

Normally if an item is damaged in shipping and a claim is filed, the shipping company will pay the cost of having it shipped to their claims center.

Well that hasn't been mine.

Filing a NAD claim with eBay resulted in them emailing me a return label to print out, attach to the package, and drop off at a UPS pickup point, at no cost to me.

Once they had received confirmation of the seller getting it back, I was refunded everything I had initially paid for by PayPal.

I was foolishly patient with a seller who shipped a poorly packed radio and it got beat up. He said contact UPS and make a claim. I had UPS pick it up and filled out the paperwork for it. They said the shipper would receive the refund, if any. Found out that UPS takes 90 days to settle up. The seller went away, I waited too long to claim against him on ebay paypal etc. and ended up with no 100$ and nothing but the chance to flame him on feedback. I was the last feedback, he disappeared from ebay then. Never give them more than a week or two to work it out before you open a dispute or you might be shafted. As long as you have pictures and a dispute you have a chance to get your money back. Don't let them give you excuses and try to delay you, I learned that costly lesson real well some years ago.

Ive had this happen a few times over the past 15 years or so. Shipping is a big deal, for really rare, or valuable items I get picked up, or pick them up.

I have not followed this thread for a while. The results are disgusting. I always pack items so that you can play football with them!

This case was settled with a full refund.

When I returned the radio to the seller I added USPS Del Conf and a USPS proof of delivery green post card that required a signature.
I received the signed card back only recently (about 3 1/2 weeks).
Then I noticed that the seller had moved from New York to Pennsylvania. The buyer's new address was placed on the back of the card by the PO.
