I hear about fantasy football, whatever that is.
I think it would be great to pick my neighbors from the guys here.
Fantasy ARF Neighborhood?

I could pick a quick dozen of yous guys I'd love to have an neighbors.
After reading thousands or more posts you get the "flavor" of people. Car/bike/inventor/experts/smart asses/opinionated/BBQ/drinkers/hoarders...
I sure would like to be surrendered by these like-minded people.

Been here 35yrs and my neighbors are strangers.

Personally, I think it would be nicer to have Playboy centerfolds as neighbors.

To your point... over the years ....I've occasionally thought about why I chose some of my friends.. and enjoyed them, and I think underneath it all perhaps I found I enjoy them because I find I can and do learn from them either in direct technical conversation or somehow by rubbing off just being around them.
Intellectual and/or philosophical conversation is pleasant, I find too.

There are a whole lot of members here I would like to meet or live close to. They seem like great people.

+1 that.
I was a very close pal with the late Chris Haedt who not only became an expert radio restorer but a noted expert Tube Tester expert in only 7 years in the hobby. A genius, probably. He was an engineer in the air and fluid pump biz, but had a bad ticker and died at age 53. I met him at age 46 when he got into this stuff. ANYWAYS, we were on the total opposite sides of the political fence. Chris would drive over an hour to come here and get parts for his stuff and we'd go to lunch and "debate" the world topics of the day, or year, or whatever. And, we stayed close friends.

At the live shows where I sell parts I see many of you. I dont even remember everyone's names, but I consider everyone a friend until proven otherwise. Know what? Barely 5% fall into the "otherwise" group. Folks in this group are a cut above, overall. And, quite a mix of "types" as my wife Leann will tell you ! She enjoys the oddities because she too is one !

Met some of my best pals thru the hobby.

Hope to meet you all someday face to face.

Just think, we could argue over shotgun recaps and soldering iron size in person, not just electronically! Such fun.

epic fights on how to make a radio safe, add an mp3 input to anything, and how someone destroyed some radio by "upcycling" it.

Hey! then a random person would come in and tell everyone they were going to turn an atwater kent in to a guitar amp and the angry mob would lynch them.

Hopefully I'm not one of those "otherwise."

:D

Actually Mark, I bet you have one of the same characteristics I have. I don't attend quite as many radio events, but I'm in a lot of car circles. Seems everybody knows me -- folks come up to me and say hello. I'll have a quick conversation, then walk away and ask mself "Who was that?" I don't know everyone, but everyone seems to know me.

We all have different personalities and backgrounds. There is no need for everybody to have exactly the same interests and same personalities. Things would be quite boring that way. In our club, we have someone who has been a radio station engineer as well as personality. We have someone who has very little technical knowledge but enjoys collecting -- and has run several unrelated businesses. He currently plays in a local rock band. Myself, I work with vintage car radios, doing mainly conversions. A former member who moved away, was a jeweler and coin/silver collector, and understood the business of buying/selling/flipping for profit. Another has been an antique dealer, but buys and sells antique radios -- antique, as in crystal sets and headphones. We also have a truck driver. None of us really fit the stereotype of a radio technician/collector, but all of us have worked together, each bringing expertise to the party. Our ideas differ when we discuss things at meetings, but if we keep our minds open we try different things and learn.

Bottom line, our strength comes from our diversity.

Scenario: bunch of radio collectors all living on the same block.

Estate sale day, nice radios, etc. listed. Said bunch all racing to location, swear words flying, tires screeching, possibly a few of them getting run off the road. Everyone grabbing for the same goodies; bruises and minor cuts abound. Lots of destruction and bad feelings all around.
Emergency room techs will begin to address us by our first names. Thrift stores will ban us; surplus stores will call the police when we drive up; we get the nickname 'Wild Bunch'

No thanks. I like living far from the rest of you. No offense intended.

But what about your spouses, partners, mates, better halves?
Do they have anything to say in this matter?
Big chance you live where you live now because they also have their interests there.
Are they happy with their partners all day talking with the neighbor about coils ,capacitors and antennas?
Best stay where you are and be happy with your family, friends and (some good) neighbors.

Jard N.
BTW Something completely different.
I saw this in another post.
What means : I'll probably catch some flack for this post ?

Well, yeah!

Don't have any immediate ARF neighbors but part of an organization
(MRHS) where many members live close by. And we get into ALL KINDS
of trouble together. Much like drinking buddies but in our case,
radio collectiing/restoring buddies. To the chagrin of our wives.
Especially mine! Our palette trends more toward the alluring aroma
of rusty, crusty, mouldy boat anchors. Our most recent adventure
was yesterday.

Hi, We are a diverse group. Radios are probably just one of many interests and
experiences we could discuss, given close proximity. I consider ARF neighbors to be those
located in surrounding states and provinces. Central plains more or less. We probably share more common experiences than those in the far east or west coasts. Most ARFers are just
friends I haven't met yet.

Perhaps we should have a convention at the "Red Door Inn"? (Sly promotional)

"catching flack" means that someone may complain and then you may hear warning-complaints and get in trouble maybe.

Flack:
1.
antiaircraft fire, especially as experienced by the crews of combat airplanes at which the fire is directed.
2.
criticism; hostile reaction; abuse:
Such an unpopular decision is bound to draw a lot of flak from the press
.

One of my neighbors told me his first job was repairing Regency transistor radios and he thought he still had some transistors somewhere, but he hasn't been able to find them yet. Another neighbor does a lot of target shooting as twice UPS has left ammunition that he ordered at my house!

We have a Cars & Coffee show at the local shopping center the first Saturday of every month and I've gotten to know a number of enthusiasts over the last 3 years. The show started out with only a few dozen vehicles, but has grown to over 100 each month. Looking forward to the show tomorrow morning!

What's the problem??

Jard asked:"What means : I'll probably catch some flack for this post ?"
(He's from the Netherlands and doesn't know the meaning.)

So I was helping him to understand the meaning of the term, by posting the dictionary.com definition.
Isn't that what he wanted to know?
