Hello again fella's, Brought home a nice Silvertone 4586 last weekend. Started out as usual with a visual inspection and cleaning. Tested and replaced bad tubes.replaced rubber insulators under tuning capacitor. Re-capped and checked cadohm resistor. Looked for any open resistors or crunchy wires. Hooked up variac and brought slowly. Have very slight audio with very weak signal pick up. Something is wrong in the audio section for sure. Will check voltages tonight. Also cleaned and lubricated all switches. Anyone have any suggestion ? Silvertone put together a very complete set of schematics for this radio. Has lots of diagrams and lots of info not normally given. Even has a troubleshooting section. Love the gold dial. murf

Check the part number of your chassis. There are two versions. The one using a 6H6 was made by Stewart Warner for Sears and the chassis number will have the prefix 100. The other version uses a 6Q7 and was made by Colonial, with prefix 101. There should be a sticker on the chassis. With this information you can find the right schematic. The speaker must be connected before trying to operate the set or check voltages. Once you check voltages in the audio section, and they seem OK, a length of insulated wire touched to the grid of the first audio ought to give you a healthy hum in the speaker if audio is OK.

Yes I am aware of that. Noticed on the very complete schematics that they also make note of a bad coil on the police band that will shut the radio down. Murf

I have a very clean 4586 colonial chassis and speaker complete with original packet owners manual materials. I will be listing on monday in the classified section for trade. Just have to figure out how to upload pics. Never did it before.

Seems that I have minimal plate voltage to one of the 6f6 tubes that is causing problems with the audio. I believe that is pin 3. Gonna have to try to trace it bback to the source. murf

Had a friend of mine diagnose this chassis and he believes the output tranny is bad. Any idea what the specs are on this 6f6 push/pull output transformer? Difficult job to tackle? murf

When dealing with PP output, it's a given if plate voltage is missing on one output, transformer is the issue... Specs for various output tubes are included here http://www.radioremembered.org/outimp.htm
