Going through my stash of tubes and I came across a balloon 5 pin engraved tube that only says 4-3 on base. I'm stumped, its not a 43 tube which is 6 pin and I assume since its engraved there was no marking on glass. If it was stamped on glass its gone now and destined for trash. Thanks

Test as a #27 triode tube. It's definitely not trash.

Not sure of the size. If smaller than #27 globe could be 56, 37 or 76 tube.

Success, it tests as a good 27 tube. Thanks Norm!

Try breathing on the glass in several areas and see if the condensation makes any numbers appear when held in the light.

Have gotten the id to several tubes that way.

I did the old "stick in the freezer trick" and was skeptical but it did work on a couple tubes when held at the right angle. Did not work on this tube though. I still wonder what the significant of the 4-3 is.

To find a lost number, first , concentrate on the area above the "key". The "key" is between the filament pins on all large pin tubes (usually the two fatter pins but on 5 pin tubes its opposite the 'one lone pin" that is spaced further away.
Next, brush your finger on your face or hair to get skin oil and brush that on the glass. try several directions and look at it under the mag lamp. Works about 90% of the time. No cooling needed.

The number was marked above the key reliably before WW2. So, even octals did that (not Loctals as they were ALWAYS marked on top). After WW2, marking can be anywhere.

One way to tell if is a 27 or a 56 is to insert an AC ammeter in series with the heater.

At 2.5 volts, a 27 will draw 1.75 amps

a 56 will only draw 1 amp.

The "4-3" is the date code. Those Tung Sol tubes usually have their designations etched in near the top of the bulb, on the rounded crown portion- unlike many other manufacturers.

Balloon tubes are always good for display, you shouldn't throw them out regardless. I'm sure that someone would buy them.
