I restored an sx101a and it had sensitivity problems. I traced it to one of the I F cans on the sub assembly. does anyone know how to get the cover of the I F can? It looks to me that you press in the tangs on the top of the can where the tuning threads are the cover should lift off. Mine will not come off and I do not want to force it. Thanks,Glenn

Which transformer? I can take a look and tell you specifically, but my recollection is that there are threaded studs riveted to the base of the can which are in turn secured by nuts under the chassis.

one of the 2nd I F cans T4. I unscrewed the nuts under the can and my hope was to lift the cover without unsoldering the base. There are two rivets on opposite sides near the bottom of the cover-do those need to be removed?

The rivets usually just hold the threaded studs to the lower edge of the metal can. Haven't had one from that exact model apart, but most IF cans of that vintage which are stud mounted also have some other means of keeping the phenolic terminal base into the metal can, and are impossible to remove the can from without removing the entire thing from the chassis first.

I finally got it apart by cutting all for corners about 1 inch up from the bottom and spreading the sides open. This was done because the I F transformer is enclosed in a metal tube that has riveted tabs to keep it in place. I could not get continuity at the wire and the spool is potted with a kind of glue. I used a razor blade to scrape back the potted material about 10 windings down from the top. I found continuity about 15 turns down. I had some I F wire so I soldered the wire to the form, added 15 turns to replace the open section and put it back together. It Lives! Most likely not 100% but better than a broken rig. Sounds Mickey Mouse but it turned out O.K. Laughing
