I could use some help on the type of componets used on this tube tester. I am new to working with eletronics and some of the older pieces I have not seen before. My first question is for the 2500ohm 2W resistor. It is about 3 inches long and flat. I am guessing it is a flat wirewound resistor. The coating has a sandy finish and doesn't look to be in great shape although it reads correctly with a DVM. Should I replace this and if so with what?

| If the resistor looks bad, I would replace it, probably with a 5 watt resistor. Does the tester function OK? |

The tester seems to be working fine. What I have replaced so far is two 470 ohm resisitors with metal oxide ones and the BYI diode with a ratshack 1N4005. I also resoldered all connections. See resistor and parts that have been replaced in pic below. Never seen a diode like that before, hope I chose a equivalant replacement.

Now just replace the capacitors and you should be all set.

This is weird: I'm sure I replied to this thread today, either at lunch or break time, but I don't see my post now.
It's not the first time the server has skipped posts, but usually they show up after a couple of reloads. |

Alan, since it looks like your post isn't going to come through. Can you reply again?
I am still curious about what kind of resistor this is, even though it might not be replaced since it test ok.
Thanks |

The resistor is a wirewound sand resistor. If the wires are not corroding away and it reads good it will be fine to use.
