I don't think they are testing the waters. The cabinet looks very good. It would be nice to know if it is the original finish or if it has been well refinished

OK, I'll say it, that bid looks pretty stratospheric.

I talked with Jim Sargent and he saying its all original has not been refinished but showing signs of its age. This Strat may not have been registered as of yet with the other surviving Stratosphere's that have been. From the looks of it it hasn't been serviced in a very long time and possibly never, you'll know for sure once you remove the chassis and look.

If anybody here reading this buys that Stratosphere I am offering my skills for a total cabinet restoration and if your wanting the electrical work restored a friend and long time club member a retired electrical engineer is willing to put his time in also to get it playing good as new, so now the new owner can get this ultra rare Zenith totally restored before it leaves Texas.

It's on the registry but without details such as number of knobs, frequency coverage, and if it is in a cabinet.

It appears to have been serviced with all but one of the original electrolytic caps having been replaced, though the replacements are very similar. So the service was probably long ago.

Oh my giddy aunt!
why would you do that?
anyone can see that all that the cabinet needs is subtle and sympathetic retouching in a few places.

This Zenith 1000Z (later version) is in extremely nice original condition. It even comes with a layer of dust. It's not 100% perfect, it does have a few scratches on the finish and a few tares on the grill cloth but to refinish it or to clear coat it with anything, even with clear lacquer, would be an historical SIN. This is probably the second nicest Stratosphere I've seen after the one that sold back in 2008 for $73,000 on Ebay.

This is exactly the condition I prefer to acquire my antique radios. Original and, I'm guessing, mostly unprocessed by any collector or restorer. If this was my set, I'd have complete control over the quality of the outcome of this radio's restoration and I wouldn't be limited or side tracked by someone else's restoration. I can't see this set selling for a penny less then $45,000 even in today's market. Hopefully, whoever winds up getting this set does a careful, historically sensitive, restoration and not just bulldoze their way through the restoration like what happened to that poor Crosley WLW with it's original cloth covered wiring and wire harnessing having been replaced with modern, brightly colored, orange PVC wiring throughout the system. I still shudder when I think of it.

Thanks for saving those photos Micheal. Stunning!

I am very curious what this set will sell for.

Just went over and took a look at it. It is exactly as described. There are some scratches on the black trim areas and a little scuffing on the top left side, but I think those scuffs would rub out with a little careful cleaning. Everything inside looks original, to include radio shop stickers on some of the tubes. Pretty amazing piece in pretty much untouched condition!

If anyone here buys this..... PLEASE don't refinish it. That would absolutely ruin it. Original finishes that are in as nice of shape as this one are a lot more rare than something that's been stripped and redone. Once you strip an original finish its gone forever.

Hi Norman I got the numbers from this strat. And yes it was already on the list. I will update the info. This one is 6 knob later 45 mhz chassis. The only thing missing will be who bought the radio from Sargents Auction. Hammer shows 29K + 2900 buyers premium plus sales tax. I get grand total of $33,893.75 for this one. Someone got an excellent buy on this radio. 754266

For an original finish this one looks very nice. I would leave it alone. Clean and maybe a touchup a scratch here and there.

I am one of several keepers of the 1000Z Stratsphere serial numbers list
