No relation but this is shaping up to be a bargain. Love the 1541, performance is only a tick down from my 39-690, great fidelity restored properly. When purchased mine could best be described as “brutal”.

Strange, the cabinet for the Grunow 1541, in the auction, doesn't have a flip down lid and it looks like it has some sort of an attached wooden front panel that has carved/routed molding around the edges. I've never seen a 1541 cabinet quite like that before. I see who's selling it which doesn't exactly boost my confidence about this sale.

Below is an example of the Ebay 1541 with the raised and edge molded front panel.

Example of flip down lid.

Very strange. When I looked at this post earlier today, the eBay link pointed to an auction by ecate02 for the radio that's pictured by tasar. It had been refinished in high-contrast typical of the radios being sold by that seller recently, and it still had 6 days to go on the auction.

But now when I follow the link, it appears to point back to an auction which completed today by glock1958 for the radio pictured by Michael. There's no sign of the listing for the radio by ecate02. It just *poof* vanished, like it was never listed at all.

The cabinets are different. The ecate02 cabinet has 7 grill bars and evidence of the flip down lid. The glock1958 cabinet has only 5 grill bars and no flip down lid. I believe we've seen and discussed these 1541 cabinet differences in another thread 3 or 4 years ago.

So to clarify, the url I provided was for “glock”, set sold just south of $400.
Indiana pointed out the top mold as a continuation of the picture frame affect around dash. I actually missed that. Those photos are of my rebuilt 1541. The top waterfall above dash comes to halt when verticle and is a sharp edge allowing front cover pass thru. Here’s mine with peeling veneer and all.

So someone either did a nice job of covering the open slot area with molding, or this is a factory mod perhaps a non-dial cover option ? Looking closer it also appears the “waterfall” front does not come to an edge as with mine, but has a return rearward to the dash plane. Don’t see many of the 1541 so docs are limited. What I do know is the trio 6F6 output is a very close sonic match to the Philco 690. Cabinet structure is the difference.

Top veneer particularly outstanding on the 1541, here’s pic just before final compounding which removes the subtle “fisheye” common with multiple lacquer coats.

FWIW, I have a Grunow 1561, very similar to the 1541 shown but with five vertical bars in front of the speaker instead of seven. It's also a 15 tube monster with hi-fi, probably the same chassis as the 1541. Mine does not have the fold down front piece, nor the cardboard insert on the underside of the top, apparently shielding the chassis from dust or something. It'll probably be a very powerful performer when I get around to working on it. A nice garage sale find a couple years ago.

You make the case that the EBay listing was for a 1561 not 1541 ie 5 rather than 7 front bars. Now we know “ the rest of the story”.

My 1541 is more than unusual.

Hi All,
I was the “lucky” winner of this unit.
I will post photos after it arrives.
