I don't collect transistor radios, but I do have a question about this one: is that what collectors call a "PEARLESCENT" color one?

Thanks,

Terry

Yes, it is indeed one of the several Pearlescent colors that were later offered, and are very rare. I remember seeing a Pearlescent blue TR-1 in lesser shape go for about two grand on eBay a good 10 years ago or so.

A blue Pearlescent went for over 5 grand in Sep 2018 (3.77 oz of gold).

Kinda neat, I don't usually collect transistor radios. So, judging by this thread, I won't ever have one of these!

Same here! Serious collectors of transistor radios are like catalin radio collectors - they fiercely pursue the rare models to complete their collection. All it takes is two of those bidders needing that pink model to complete their TR-1 collection and the sky really is the limit on it.
It must feel so odd paying that kind of money for basically a cheesy looking little radio! The TR-1 looks so plain-Jane like the late '60's, '70's transistor models.

It is only numbers to some folks. The accountants will make it a tax deduction somehow.

Is it just the lighting, or is there something wrong with the PC board and components? Looked like it was fried or coated with something? Not that that matters for this set.. it is eye candy..

Lol, I DO collect 'em, but certainly not gonna spend thousands on any one set. The more common black, white, or grey cabinets usually go for several hundred on eBay. Remember, it's an icon; the iPod of its day.

Good point; I'd like to think it's just the lighting, as there's nothing inherently shiny on the PCB, but maybe someone spilled a Coke on it, lol. The black Electrolytic on the left side of the battery compartment was a replacement. The original was the same style as the one on the right side.

I cant say it's crazy as I'm guilty of paying way to much for late 30's climax radio's. But 3,000 buys me one heck of a climax.
