I don't recall the last time an example of this model came up for sale. One the top ultimate vintage radios on my personal list. Quintessential Art-Deco.

Nice example it seems to me and yeah its been awhile since we talked about these Air King sets. These things..I find it difficult to look at the radio and not immediately think about the money which I know isn't correct...I should be able to appreciate the design work by itself...which was/is fairly "brave" at the time. Gotta be a deco fan's near ultimate/

My personal opinion ..... I see nothing in that set as far as design or technology that would entice me to pay more for it than I would for any other radio of the era. Its design does very little for me. it's .... ok.

just my $0.05

I wish that they were bigger. They are really small in person .

I too am often turned-off by over-hyped sets, but not with this one. It has impressed me for many years. This particular model with Egyptian decoration and lever knobs is an artistic study in Art-Deco more than just a vintage radio set.

With this model you're up in the big leagues so it's no surprise to see it in the $5-$10,000 range. If it was more desirable colors like red, lavender or green it might be twice that amount.

I agree with John Bartley. Its about a $$25.00 chassis in a thin walled, small plastic,

$8,975.00 case.

I'm very surprised that they made it in brown. They other colors are so much better

what a great set, It begs the question why the Chinese never reproduced it.

Also, if I was a potential buyer, why no photos of the chassis???????...........

+1. It's different, but I don't think it's $9k different.

If I had that kind of money to blow on the hobby, I'd pick up a couple of nice Scott consoles and maybe have a little left over.

if you had that kind of money to blow on the hobby you would have bought a couple of nice Scott Consoles years ago as they are much easier to find

You have to remember the Air King is an iconic example of Art-Deco that is featured in many books on the subject. The chassis is basically irrelevant. This goes too for catalins, sets like the Majestic signature series consoles, and novelty sets like the Charlie McCarthy, Mickey Mouse, etc. People pay many thousands of dollars simply for esthetics.

Yes, I agree that it is a significant item. I'm just saying that it doesn't do anything for me personally. Others may find the styling attractive.

Now as far as the Majestic consoles goes ..... that is entirely different. I find them very attractive! I'd buy one of them if I could find the right deal. That also goes for a couple of the similar styled Strombergs.

My catalin friend sold his red Air King in year 1999 for $20,000 and the buyer had a year to live because of cancer. He just had to have it.

I'd rather have this Air King.
