Yeah. You're looking at the flashing colors?

Attractive, would be interesting if it worked that way in reality. But I think that is some sort of artifact caused by the video camera, not what the tuning meter actually looks like.

I am pretty sure that the Youtube video was done by an ARF member of his 1355. Maybe he will chime in on this thread...

Too bad the legs have been cut off. As is usual for this vintage of cabinet.

Yes, that video is mine.
It was taken back in 1987 with the Zenith branded JVC camcorder like the image shown.
It was one of the first to use a CCD image sensor rather than a Vidicon tube and only has a minimum lux sensitivity of 15, it it was horrible in low light settings.
Color separation is likely due to the age of the recording.

Anyhow, i uploaded it to YouTube as I thought it was unique enough.

The radio is a great player and it is sad the one on ebay is missing its legs.

I just looked at your Airline on there, I have the Apex 10B and in very good condition. I haven't seen one on Ebay for at least 3 years up for sale.

Sincerely

Thank you! Its been a wonderful sounding radio. I've seen an Apex 10B show up on Craigslist now and again, but I live not far from the factory. (Marion Indiana)

The meter has a backlight, but never changes color.

Yes, mine has a backlight too but it doesn't change colors either, I didn't know they were supposed to be. I wasn't too far either from the factory, I lived in Lawrence Indiana

Several years ago, a friend gave me a 10b in the Apex cabinet. It is in great condition BUT was missing the speaker at the time. I held out for several years for an original speaker and eventually, somebody offered EXACTLY the speaker I needed for $10 on eBay! When I received the speaker I spliced in the wiring at the radio PLAYED! My 2 cents....Dave

Does your radio have the tuning meter to change colors?

No, the color flashes are an artifact of the video camera.

It doesn't look like that in real life, only on that video.

I find it interesting that we are out a generation enough that people don't recognize the artifacts from a poor VHS video recording.

I have many cool videos I could post to YouTube, including a visit to Ralph Muchow's museum, A walk around the AWA Conference in 1987 and Doug Houston's radio collection. The tapes are aging and in poor shape, but I will somehow get them converted to digital format someday soon, i hope.

There was one in use by GE, who named it the ”Colorama” feature, back I think in the late-1930’s, or thereabouts.
