I'm trying to find out the ohm rating on the original KLH Model 11/W speakers.

Does anyone know if they are 4 or 8 ohm?

Would it work to use either 4 or 8 ohm as a replacement driver?

The early KLH speakers, like the AR speakers, used drivers specifically designed for "acoustic suspension. These drivers depend on the air mass in a small sealed enclosure to provide part of the restoring force for the cone. If you replace a woofer, the replacement must be suitable for the exact volume (and stuffing) of the KLH enclosure. And even then, the response will be unlikely to match a similar enclosure with its original driver.
Bottom line: changing woofers in an acoustic suspension enclosure is a baaaad idea.

Thanks for your reply.

The replacement drivers I am considering are recommended for a .18 cubic foot enclosure, and that is exactly what the KLH Model 11
boxes are. I understand your reasoning but have replaced drivers in acoustic suspension systems before, and had really good results.

Balanced speakers, with very good spl/freq. specs really help ensure this.

Have you had first-hand experience that goes counter to this result?

I was mainly wondering if the KLH Model 11's were designed as 4 or 8 ohm

The operating instructions indicate using 8 ohm speakers (16 ohms can be used)....they do not recommend 4 ohm speakers.

Tbirdkid,

Thanks for the reply. I couldn't find this in the manual.
