Hello all, I have been looking to buy a reel to reel player for several months and and wanted to make some recording and play some old vintage taps my step dad has in several boxes. I was given the chance to buy this Sony 640 that works for $25. It is in remarkable condition on the outside, no scratches or dings or gouges. It does play and the heads after a cleaning have no groves so maybe little wear. Any way the two things I have noticed that are "bad" are one, the dial counter is inop. Two, in fast reverse when stop is pressed the tape makes a big loop and this has to be taken up by manually turning the reels.

So any ideas what to do to fix her and get it running properly would be appreciated.

Thanks and God bless.

Mike J

p.s. still hoping to acquire the Otari reel to reel as well.

The counter might have dried, hard grease or loose or broken belt.

The supply reel possibly brakes faster or better than the takeup reel. Check the pads, solenoids, etc. that operate the reel brakes.

Not really specific to any deck, but most will be similar in those mechanics.
