I bought this at a recent SCARS swap meet and picked it up yesterday. Some guys there claimed the drivers were UTAH, but I see Pioneer on the horn tweeter, and suspect the woofer is also Pioneer. What do you think? Have you every seen one of these? The horn tweeter is marked Pioneer PT-2, and the 15" woofer is marked PA15R.

the baffle looks to be something home made, perhaps.

I see what looks to be an RCA 8" speaker in the middle based on the magnet and basket structure. I would like to see if it has one of those infamous RCA curvilinear cones.

I may be wrong.

The woofer date code, 328 is UTAH indeed.

With what looks like an adapter board supporting the tweeter, I suspect that it was replaced; not original. Could be that the tweeter went open voice coil and was replaced.

Looks like a classic 1950s bass-reflex speaker enclosure, maybe constructed from a kit and with drivers from the period, in which someone replaced the tweeter.

Those tweeters seem to be something people like, given the asking prices I see for them.

I suspect that might have had a cone tweeter or some other tweeter and perhaps the Pioneer sounded better or he original failed and that's all they had.

The woofer is a Utah, the midrange looks like a Jensen (I need the numbers on it to confirm) and the tweeter is a Pioneer. (I collect 1960’s/50s etc. speaker drivers).
I love the way they look, but if you want real hifi, replace the tweeter. I was very surprised when I saw the specs on them. That Pioneer rolls off around 12-14KC!!
It looks like it would go much higher.

Peace,
DrRick

If the OP likes the sound of the speaker and wants response to 16KHz, all he needs to do is put a 12KHz low pass in series with the existing tweeter of the same order as the existing crossover then install a small dome tweeter crossed over at 12KHz with the same order crossover.

I've done that with a speaker before and was pleased with the results.

don't waste time with a single 6 db/oct capacitor filter.

use a second order xover with a 12dB/oct slope. the tweeter will like you even more.

OR he could get one of those CTS or Moto. type piezo horn tweeters and put a 16 ohm resistor across it to match the crossover output. I hope you can find them still.
I think there are alot of cheapo clone piezo tweeters now that supposedly are not as good. Then he could sell the Pioneer to someone that values it above it's performance
level on ebay. "Fukuin Electric"?
