My favorite oldies station is KYNO in Fresno. Their normal fare is '50's and '60's pop music. Friday and Saturday evenings they have Wolfman Jack programming for several hours.

They used to broadcast on 1430 Kc with 5 kilowatts of power, which made it difficult to receive over about 200 mountainous miles.

Just last month however, they switched to 940 Kc, and 50 KW, which although isn't perfect, makes it a bit easier to receive at night.

I do listen to them on my internet radio, but OTA is more fun, LOL.

I recently noticed this station coming in here in San Jose in the evening, but not very reliably. During the day I can only get the faintest blip of a signal from it. If they are really 50 kW, they must have a directional antenna that excludes the Bay Area. I can get 580 KMJ from Fresno all the time (not strong, but there); I'm not sure what KMJ's power level is.

KMJ isn't a station I want to listen to with its opinionated talk radio format, but it's a useful marker on the dial when working on radios.

KYRO is one I really would like to receive. Is there info on its broadcast antenna pattern somewhere?

Thanks. Looks like both are 50 kW with directional antenna patterns, but KMJ’s is much more favorable toward San Jose.

Yes, it's not always reliable in the early evening. I stayed up until 5am last night/this morning, hooked on their oldies playing through my Zenith and Philco consoles, and as the evening got later, their signal came in stronger.

AFA northern California reception here in SoCal, KCBS/740/San Francisco, KMJ/580/Fresno, and KFBK/1530/Sacramento are all 50 kilowatters, and come booming in as if they were locals every evening.

I just heard KYNO up here in Kingman, AZ, so whatever they did made a big difference in their signal. The signal wasn't strong, but listenable. Harry

You might try more skyhook. A random length long wire, or a tuned loop could offer stronger reception.

Long wires usually pick up too much noise here, but I could imagine a nice tuned loop might work wonders to improve daytime reception of both KYNO and Monterey's KNRY, which has similar programming. At might, insufficient signal strength usually isn't the issue; it's which station on a channel is going to win.

As far as LA stations that we receive very nicely up here in the evenings, KFI and KNX come to mind immediately.

You probably also get KGO down there. I listen to a talk show on there now and then, and there are often SoCal callers in the evening.

Sounds like a tunable loop might be in your future. It can be angled, placed in back, along side, etc., the receiver, to null a competing signal.

You can buy a Selec-A-Tenna, or a Grundig AN200, sold under other names as well, or build your own. I used a 23" quilting hoop for mine, and of course it outperforms the smaller commercially made units.

Yes, I forgot about KGO/810. KOMO/1000/Seattle also comes booming in every night.

I've been listening to KYNO here in Dixon. It's a nice addition to the usual suspects as I get back into MW DXing.
