I restrung the dial cord drive on several radios late last year and they worked perfectly until I stored them overnight (last Thursday 5/9 at the Kutztown radio show). Friday morning (damp air), none of the tuning knobs would move the dial and the cords had an actual sag in them. I pulled them out of "for sale" because of that. The cord I used is sold on eBay and has good reviews; the radios are Truetone D727 and Silvertone 7241 with motorized tuning. When brought back indoors the cord shrunk and everything worked again. I tried restringing one of these same cords after soaking it in water and had enough extra length to tie a new knot; the cord became super tight after drying out. I tried soaking a 9 inch piece of loose cord to observe what happened; the cord became almost 1/4 inch longer and went back to 9 after drying.
I guess I will restring all new tuning drives using a water soaked cord. Did anyone else have this happen?
Bob.

Nylon fibers are used in some humidity gauges as the sensing element.

Nylon is one of the most hydroscopic plastics. Those industries that mold plastic components have to cycle the nylon pellets through batch or continuous drying machines before the nylon pellets are used in the injection molding machines.

Use some other material. People recommend braided fishing line (Dacron?).

Nylon is stretchy even when not wet.

Now I recall the effects of moisture on nylon... thanks. There are a lot of suppliers of braided nylon radio dial cord and for me it did work well before this. Some sellers don't say what the cord material is, but I will now restring any radio I did using this with a water soaked nylon cord... or dacron fishing line!
