I have 2 radios that each need a 5" permanent magnet speaker with mounting holes on the surround, including the Hallicrafters S38 I'm working on. In the past I've been able to find suitable replacement speakers at Play Things of the Past (http://www.oldradioparts.com/), but sadly, the owner has been having some health issues and the site is closed until March. Cancer sucks...I hope he beats it. But now I need to find another source. I've done a little searching and didn't find anything so decided to try here before expanding my search.

Where do you guys find replacement speakers?

Thanks!

Rich

Try a WTB ad in the classifieds here on ARF ? Someone probably has something close enough.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! By the way, how are speakers measured? I've always assumed it was outside edge to outside edge. Is that correct?

Parts Express is an excellent source of modern up-to-date speakers, woofers, mid ranges, tweeters, and more. The prices range from reasonable up to “high-end.” So does the performance. As a long- term audiofool, I can tell you that today’s speaker technology is way more advanced than it was as recently as 20 years back. There are far more sizes and designs available, and some (not all) are very scientifically designed and tested.

The following item just might be adaptable to working in a vintage radio:

In my experience, finding the right size is seldom the problem. Usually the problem is finding a direct bolt in replacement with the same screw-hole pattern.

But even the wrong hole pattern does not need to be a deal breaker. Usually and adapter can be fabricated to make the transition to a new speaker hole pattern.

I agree processhead. I'm pretty sure I can create an adapter on the 3D printer if I can find a suitable speaker. I've been through hundreds of listings on eBay but have not found anything that looks like it would work.

How much do I need to be concerned about impedance? The one in the S38 measures 2.3 ohms. I'm sure a 4 ohm would work...what about 8 ohm?

Thanks.

DC resistance of a speaker is usually slightly less than the rated impedance.
A “4 ohm” speaker is the ideal impedance for most radios.
But an “8 ohm” speaker will still work and won’t cause any harm.

1/8” thick Masonite is a useful material for making speaker adapter plates out of.
