I am looking for a type 80 globe tube for my Philco 70 set.

I see some on eBay but the sellers want to use the Global Shipping Program to send them to Canada.

I have read on this forum that this program will not send tubes to Canada. Is this generally true or is it hit and miss?

Thank you for your comments.

Joseph

Does it matter if it's hit and miss, as in, why take that chance? Simply contact the sellers to see who will send it regular mail. I've sent items to Canada and have never used eBay's Global Shipping program.

I've generally viewed Ebay's "Global Shipping" program as a bit of a scam that adds unnecessary "Import charges" while providing no benefits at all. I've avoided sales that use it unless it was an item I desperately wanted and there was no other option.

Why not just just advertise for the 80 globe tube here in the Classifieds section? I'm sure with all of the Canadian members here that there's GOT to be someone in your country who has a spare 80 tube somewhere in their tube stash that they'll be willing to sell and ship to you.

As stated, shipping tubes through eBay's Global Shipping program is a problem. After about three weeks, eBay will notify the buyer that they are sending them a refund and notify the buyer that they will be able to keep the money. The loss goes to eBay. The tubes are then confiscated. I am sure that there is some kind of liquidation process. I just ship international through USPS First Class International. I have shipped hundreds and never had a problem.

NEVER GSP.

NEVER GSP

NEVER GSP

Why does everyone think international shipping via USPS is hard? It's EASY. Up to 4 LBS via First Class Mail, after that Priority Mail.

Tubes, list on customs form as "TE Accy" with a HST Code (Tariff code) of 903090 (Test instrument parts) and they sail right through customs, unless broken.

There are a few listings on the auction site right now for these tubes. Location is Nova Scotia. Reasonable shipping rates.

John at Pacific TV in Esquimalt, BC, Canada has Used 80's for $12.
Buy from a vendor that knows how to ship to Canada. As already stated, there is no problem with tubes by normal mail.

I liked the Ebay GSP because it was acted like something we called
"In Bond" 60 years ago.

That meant the goods were priced in Canadian dollars at my door.

The Ebay global shipping program is a good idea in theory, but in practice, it adds a lot of expense to the shipping in the form of customs brokerage fees, much like UPS charges. If you have the item shipped through the postal system, you rarely pay anything other than GST (Canadian federal sales tax). Another reason why I avoid items that use global shipping is that it's not clear what the charges are going to be until after you've committed to buy.

Ebay GSP flags tubes because of mercury content, pretty much all tubes, that is where eBay seller "8ten1944" gets his stock.

My thanks to everyone who has replied to my question about using the Global Shipping Program to ship tubes to Canada. I have always thought of it as being very expensive but I was wondering about tubes being confiscated in this case.

I was remiss in not mentioning that I was looking for a globe style 80 for my Philco model 70.

The set is running well with what appear to be original style tubes - except for the 80.

I am hoping to find a reasonable (if that is possible!) globe 80 basically for appearances sake.

As long as it is good enough to power the set, I would be happy.

Thank you again for all of your comments.

Joseph

You did say that you were looking for a globe type in your first post. That was why I didn't suggest any vendors. I'd be too worried that a globe tube would never survive shipping by any method, no matter how well packed. I see that Pacific TV does list used 80's, and you could contact them to see if any of them are globe type. If they're confident that they can ship them, then I'd buy them from them. Pacific TV is very good to deal with.

Hello Bob

Thank you for the reply. I must have had a seniors moment when I forgot that I had mentioned a globe 80 in my initial message!

I did contact Pacific tv and they told me that they didn't have any globe tubes in stock.

I will have to keep looking but when I combine the cost of the tube and the shipping charges, the cost in Canadian funds makes me hesitate.

Thank you again.

Joseph

Joseph,

Most radio clubs carry an inventory of tubes. It may pay you to contact various Canadian clubs and see if one will sell you a globe 80 from their stash.

cheers

Interesting comment "that is where ebay seller 8ten1944 gets his stock".
Joe, could you expand on your comment. eBay GSP is a consolidator Located in Kentucky, 8ten1944 is in Michigan.
I have sent several cease and desist letters to him as he was helping himself to my pictures for his listings. I also have bought some tubes from him. I would hate to think that I was buying back the tubes that I sent through the GSP. Mike

Michigan to KY is not that far to pick up a few skids of goods. I'm thinking trucks driving on the highways to get there and back.

if he is selling that item with your picture, maybe it is that exact item no? Did those items ship GSP to international destinations is my 1st question on that.

I've exchanged emails with him, and he does buy it from eBay, (and maybe other sources) and eBay owns the pictures, not you.
No problem with me on it, I don't sell or ship international, so not my problem. But I will catch deals from him from those who do.
He is on the up and up and offers good deals. Capitalism is a great thing, celebrate it.
