I think most states have laws/ordinances against such noise but fail to enforce them. Heck, probably 25% of the middle age and older cops I knew had noisy bikes. I understand the supposed difficulty in making the case in court, but still...

Isn't that the truth? I have motorcycles but think that those who have straight pipes on a Harley are obnoxious.

I would like to verify the source and data, but it stands to reason. There is very little emission controls on these engines.

The ones who cruise around in the private jets telling everyone else how to live are the worst pollution offenders!

Tom, you are spot on there! NIMBY...

My 2007 750cc Moto Guzzi has EFI and also has a catalytic converter with an oxygen sensor bolted onto it.
It is supposed to conform to European standards on emissions. (at least in 2007)

How that compares to automobile emissions I do not know.

They do make electric Harley’s. Agree, not the same.

I've been trying to picture a Motorcyle "Club" rolling up to an intersection beside a hybrid with it's engine idling, drowning them out, and the club decides to intimidate the hybrid driver by revving up their electric motors.... would make for a great movie scene

Over the last four decades of servicing power equipment, this ^^^ has been a topic that has grown in importance in the OEM training we attended every year. When I first heard the notion that lawnmowers were among the worst offenders, I was a bit of a disbeliever, but then I started paying attention to all the little ways that they pollute, little ways that cumulatively become one huge mess. The problem really does exist.

The two cycle engines are not just gross polluters, but VERY noisy.

We are the only owners on our street who do their own yard care. That means that different yard care providers show-up on different days to do different yards, each with an assortment of noisy equipment.

For the small California yards, battery electric equipment works great. We've got a battery electric mower, blower, string trimmer, and hedge trimmer. Makita has one of the broadest ranges of battery electric equipment, and it is all above average to superior quality.

Harleys are fine machines, and the Rolls Royce amongst motorcycles. IMHO, the runner up would be the Indian motorcycles.

Perhaps, but road bikes in general have four cycle engines.

And very loud exhaust systems on some of them - very often made louder by the owners.

Anyone who compares a Harley to a rolls royce doesn't have a clue about motorcycles. I have ridden for 60 years, I have owned Harleys, Indians, Yamaha, Gold wings, BSA, etc. I still have a full dress Harley and a Suzuki 1100cc super bike. No, Harley is not top of the line.

As far as emissions go motorcycles are not exempt from emission controls.

By law, Motorcycles must be manufactured to specific parameters as to exhaust noise.

If kept stock, they would be fine, but too few leave them stock and have the dealer install straight pipes.

Exactly. I have taken several rides on new Harley Davidson motorcycles during the dealer's open house. New bikes are quiet. However, many owners (as you already know) put straight pipes on them and they are obnoxious.

Even motocross has long been dominated by four stroke engines once you get out of the 125cc class. My Puch Maxi moped from 1982 was a 2 stroke engine :D 2 stroke sees very little use these days beyond some yard equipment.
