I started using DuckDuckGo a few months ago, after using Google exclusively for years. I have been surprised at how good i think DDG is. But i have not done side-by-side comparisons.

What does the group think, and why?

Is Google far superior? Or has DDG caught up or surpassed them?

I can't use Google anymore because they feed me what others want me to see, not what I want to see. Their search accuracy is approaching Amazon's.

I understand Bing uses the Google search engine and rebrands it. I don't use it so I don't know how accurate it is. Maybe DDG does similarly but strips away some irrelevant results. I do feel that DDG gives me more what I want than Google.

Started using DDG about a year ago as my default and it’s 85% fine. Every so often I’ll stick the !g on the end of my search to make it try Google instead if I’m not happy with what DDG came up with, and get different search results. No reason to change my default back though.

DuckDuckGo here.

About 2 years ago now, the electric utility I work for decided that all computers with the Google Chrome browser had to migrate to Edge, and Chrome had to be wiped off the hard drive IMMEDIATELY. (Emphasis theirs)

No explanation, but we figured it was related to spyware. They prefer we don’t use the Google search engine either.

I use both, Chrome primarily because it has all my passwords and login info, DDG when I want some privacy or want to find something that offends Googles sensibilities (Politics, not porn).

Chrome has the handy Incognito mode which doesn't save anything to your device when you use it.

I've tried it a few times....I thought it was ok, but I didn't feel any pressing need to migrate to it from Google. If search privacy is a big concern, then it makes sense....but I really don't do any browsing of a sensitive nature

DuckDuckGo here. Google is far too intrusive though I do continue to use Gmail.
Speaking of DuckDuckGo, where did that silly name come from?

I use both Duck Duck Go and Google rare occasions Bing.

When I am searching for something that I do not want to buy I prefer DDG because its rankings are not bought/sold as a commodity.

Google because I stand a better chance at finding a wider variety of topics once I am beyond page 2...

Bing, when all else fails.

Yes, I once used Alta Vista... With Netscape Navigator on dial-up

BTW the UK detective drama shows use "The Big Browse" did that really exist or a "movie prop"?

Use GOOGLE all the time. With specific words in the Search Box and/or quotes, I generally get the info I want without a lot of weird stuff.

Most of the time I use DuckDuckGo.

Google has gotten to where half of what I was given was advertising no matter what I searched for. I will still use Google for their book and newspaper archive.

I thought it was a stealth reference, kind of like when playing paintball, you have to duck behind cover, duck again, then go,

I think all search engines use Google to get search results and what happens after that who knows.

I use DDG however sometimes have to use Google search when I can't find something using DDG.

Seems everyone collects personal data ain't no privacy on the WWW.

I usually use startpage.com which is based in the Netherlands; I believe it uses Google though; it somehow isolates the search for greater privacy protection.

I got tired of Google steering me to paid ads, so started using DDG instead maybe two years ago, and am pleased with it.

Switched to DDG a couple of years ago and haven't looked back. As someone else mentioned, I got sick and tired of Google manipulating the search results to highlight what they wanted me to see.

I've used Google forever, it's ok for me. Based on what I read here, I will give DDG a try.

Please do not forget Bing. You will get different results for the various search engines. Yes, many will be duplicates, but there are often differences. Sometimes Bing provides better aerial photos, sometimes Google.

DuckDuckGo is powered by Microsoft's Bing search engine.
