There are quite a number of people who display as joining on 31 Dec 1969 including some new members. What's up with that?

We were internet before internet was cool.
Actually, it was a computer upgrade that tagged them with that date.

Now you're getting "technical". You'll get 01 Jan 70 vs 31 Dec 69 depending on your login settings. Whats a few hours difference when you are having fun?

Back then the ARF was known as a pen pal club....
...and you had to be honest about how many posts you made!
The mail would be sent to Alan, he'd hang it on the bulletin board and take a picture of it, get it developed and sent copies to all the Members....

And yeah....was it slow!

The join dates of older members got lost in an upgrade years ago. The date, January 1, 1970 is the start date of UNIX time, which counts seconds from that date to tell you what day and time it is now. If there is no date associated with your profile, then you get that date. If you offset the time from GMT in your profile, you can then be before the start of UNIX time, and that makes it December 31, 1969.
