I would like to replace the two AT&T yellow ethernet cables that I alternately have connected between my two Dell desktop computers and the AT&T DSL modem. The original yellow ethernet cable which came with the AT&T DSL modem is 6 feet in length, but I would prefer to have a somewhat longer cable. Of course, I will want to purchase two such cables. Could you guys be so kind as to provide me a link for those particular cables? Thanks.

Probably almost anywhere. Ethernet cables come in just about any color.

Many like Monoprice for cables.

There are very expensive and just too expensive ethernet cables. I have had good luck with the cables sold at Home Depot. They are reasonable too and they come in red, blue and yellow too.

I didn't think that Home Depot stocked them, but I'll check there. Thanks!

You can find them online, and they even tell you where in the store they are, if you select your store.

I keep a 1000' spool of Cat5e on hand, along with connectors and tools to make up custom lengths. It has solid copper wires, a little better quality than the average bear.
But yes, for short lengths you can find them most anywhere - hardware store, maybe even the dreaded WalMart. And at 6', it would be hard to measure the quality difference.

Yeah, I'm thinking that I'll need the Cat5e, and not the Cat6. After all, the ethernet cables that I'm looking for are what came with the original AT&T DSL modem when DSL first came out.

Either one will be fine. Cat6 will work if that's what you find; it is supposed to be superior to 5e for high speed use above 1 Gig. Again, at 6' long, nobody would be able to tell a difference.

I typically see ethernet cables at local supply houses for under $1, here is an on-line example:

https://www.cablewholesale.com/specs/10 ... om%2020%25)%20-%2010X8-08100.5%20-%20Cat6%20Yellow%20Ethernet%20Patch%20Cable,%20Snagless%2FMolded%20Boot,%206%20inch%20-%20%240.83

There is nothing special or tricky about them, and nothing special about the color (at least for home use...).

I put HD as an example because there is one everywhere, reasonably priced and most importantly, I have bought such cables there. I'm communicating over one right now.

I'm finding those ethernet cables everywhere, Lowes, Home Depot, local thrift shop, etc.

Microcenter also stocks them, in their "cheapie" brand for "installers" .... and the much more expensive retail version. Electrically they are identical for any use the average homeowner will ever care about.

I have at least 15,000' in stock, in 10 colors, but I'll only sell it as a complete lot LOL. I kind of overbought for the last project.

Barry, any of that plenum rated you have? And all 5e or any 6 in there?

Tony, it's all CAT5E Stranded. No plenum rated, and I'd rather pound nails in my eyes than work with CAT6 lol.

I have worked with CAT 5, never CAT 6. It was just coming out when I was working. I heard that it was, shall we say, rather difficult to work with! Apparently, you agree.

Didn't even know about that!!! But being around Tip and Ring for 31 years, my how things changed over the decades. I remember dial-up modems and bbs stuff and then, "Who Woud Thunk" they can get the speed that they do out of a twisted pair???

Thanks Barry. The work I do, what little I do these days calls for 6 or 6a, plenum. The hospital makes up the bulk of the work so it's not practical to keep both plenum/non-plenum on hand. Sure makes 5e easy after getting used to the 6. Not too fond of 6a. Connectors are kind of a pain. Not had to deal with 7, since not many spec it. TIA has not and it does not appear that they will formalize a spec for it. They are near, or perhaps already have released their 8 spec. But for now at least, we won't see that outside server rooms and some larger comm closets. It's just going to be used for racking, so they say. I think that's just to stall away from a complete fiber switchover. We're not ready for that but it's coming.

I only use black, green, pink, and purple in CAT anyway. But that's not a lot of wire for a remodel, or a new construction. I would take it off your hands if you had no need of it and it fit my needs, but it doesn't look like it. The last "big" job we ran somewhere between 18 and 19 miles of 6e. It was new construction, so we had good access to most of it and the electricians were great to work with. I can't do anything like that any more. Health won't let me. Not that I miss it all that much.

Yup, I think the writing is on the wall for large CATx installations. Between fiber and way more robust wireless, copper may be going the way of the dodo.

Last few trucks I built had a lot more fiber than CAT ... I ended up adding a fiber lab to my shop. Now I do mostly repairs of field fiber mults. At least I can do it while I watch TV in my underwear.
